"Sumi" means "black ink" and "e" means both "path" and "painting."
Hahnemühle FineArt has designed this special paper for Japanese Sumi–e painting. This very absorbent paper is ideal for "freestyle" brush painting, a simple yet highly aesthetic drawing made of powerful, mostly chasing and rapidly executed lines.

Create machine made rice paper to create Chinese art work.

Comments about Hahnemühle Hahnemühle Sumi-e Paper Pads:
In general I use hand made rice paper, sized and unsized to create my Chinese Ink Brush paintings. However, this is a good paper and does not run. I even painted on the seperating sheet by mistake and the results were quite good.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This paper is quite nice to use for sumi-e painting. Good quality paper, it holds ink well and I am extremely pleased. In fact I will be ordering another pad of paper.

Great paper for encaustic monotyoe
I use this paper in encaustuc monotyoe. It holds the wax well and I find it more cost effective than some if the other paper on the market.

Hahnemuhle Sumi-e Paper
from Phoenix, AZ
I am not professional, but I have tried many Sumie papers from cheapest to expensive. I have bought them in oriental art supply store, from my teachers and other online stores. None of my sumie-teachers knew about this paper but all of them liked this. They all have said that "This is a nice paper, what kind is it?" or something similar. When I say this paper is from Germany and not from China or Japan they are usually surprised.
Perfect for Sumi

I love this paper! It has great absorbency while minimal runs. I really love that it comes with blotter paper between each sheet. I will be getting lots of this, I do wish it came larger.
Definitely a good buy!

I've only used this product so far with the suminagashi marbling kit, but the results were wonderful. The pages are glued at the top and separated by semi-glossy sheets in between. It was a little difficult to tear sheets out without tearing, but with care and removing the separating sheets, it wasn't a problem in the end. The paper is unsized and performed beautifully with the kit. I suspect it would also perform as well with other inking/printing processes where the ink is absorbed immediately by the paper, although I have not tried this yet. Definitely a good buy for the money.

I use it for ink landscapes and floral paintings. It allows layering and wrinkles less than most rice papers.Takes ink washes, transparent watercolor and opaque paint.Wish it came in large sheets.
