Grumbacher's signature line of professional oil and acrylic brushes are made of Chungking hog bristle. Natural flags and interlocked construction preserve the natural curve of the bristle.
Every Gainsborough brush is handmade to ensure a high level of quality. Each one incorporates a nickel ferrule and a long wooden handle.
Brush sizes — The length and width of a brush of a given shape and size may vary by manufacturer as brush sizes are not standardized. Since fine art brushes are handmade, expect some variation even among brushes from within a single brush line.

Disappointed in some of the Gainsborough brushes
from Denver, CO
Comments about Grumbacher Gainsborough Brushes:
I bought several of these brushes a couple of weeks ago. The first time I used the #1 brush, the bristles came out in the paint. It took some time to get them all off the canvas. I then tried the #2. It didn't use as many bristles. I am hoping that this was an initial shedding. However it was disappointing. Usually Grumbacher products are better than this.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

solid workhorse brushes

I use these brushes for laying in backgrouns and color masses, as well as scrumbling and blending and working with oils in rough techniques with found objects and coarse material as well as fine canvases. They hold up well, take paint and mediums well spreading the paint with control.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Grumbacher Gainsborough Filbert Series 1271T:
I was slightly disappointed in the very thin handles of the brushes. I compared them to the same brush purchased a year ago, and the handles on the old brushes are definitely thicker,by about a sixteenth of an inch at the thin end of the brush three inches from the bottom ( No. 4 brush). The thinner brush handles flex appreciably when used with even moderate pressure.

Comments about Grumbacher Gainsborough Flat:
The bristle brush is the primary tool of the oil painter. A good brush in excellent condition is as important as quality paint. I began using Grumbacher brushes in art school and used them until they disappeared from the market 25-30 years ago. When they began to reappear I bought a couple to test their quality before buying more. As a professional painter I buy brushes the handful. Thankfully, they are the same brush I remember. I prefer the Grumbacher, flat bristle brush. The flat has long bristles which is an advantage since I wear out brushes rapidly. Grumbacher brushes have the proper thickness of hair which gives them the correct balance of flex and spring. They are well crafted with the natural curve of the bristles turned inward to support the shape of the brush. Unlike many old friends they don't lose their hair or their shape. I have used every major brand of brushes over a long career and Grumbacher brushes are still my first choice.

Good Solid Brushes!
from Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX
I have used this line of brushes for over 5 years and those brushes are still good! Handles hold up well to cleaning. Some bristle loss as with all brushes. A solid choice of investment.
A quality brush that holds up well

I've used quite a few brands in this brush category and have found the Gainsborough to be is as good as it gets. It holds its shape better than most that I've used...including the Rosrmary brand...and wears extremely well.

Not what it used to be.

Over the years I have used the Grumbacher Gainsborough without question for my oils. Recent purchases show the bristle was too long, floppy and lacking in body - just plain flimsy. I found them to be useless and won't ever buy them again.
