Comments about Great American Art Works Pastels:
I'm a beginning pastelist, studying with an instructor who uses Terry Ludwig pastels. I chose Great American's Claudia Seymour set for its color pallette and have only needed to make a few modifications. I like them very much, but they are not quite as soft or consistent as my instructor's Ludwig's; therefore I rated them as four rather than five.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Best-value Ultrasoft Pastels

Very comparable to Terry Ludwigs for most choices, and somewhat better-priced. These are some of my favorite pastels.
Better packaging needed
The pastels are great...very soft, but many arrived broken (useable, but broken). A better packaging method would be helpful.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I used these iridescent pastels to add a hint of sheen to parts of my paintings. With a love of colour and working from dark to light this pastels fit the bill - I love the softness of these pastels a beautiful range of colours couldn't be happier with my purchase.

My pastels teacher encouraged me to buy this brand, as all around best, so I used my birthday gift certificate to buy Great American pastels. The delivery time was excellent. One stick came broken, and Dick Blick immediately replaced it.

I'm an amatuer doing mostly landscapes and structures. Great American is the softest and most vibrant pastel I have used. GREAT for underpainting and larger areas, not so much for detail. Bit on the pricey side.

Good for Finishing Touches
By Tree Painter

I was almost finished with an autumn scene when I realized I needed some very subdued golden yellows in the distance. Since these trees were in the background, I needed texture that was so soft I could use a very light touch, yet have plenty of pigment. Great American pastels fit the bill. They are also useful to me for negative painting such as sky holes or carving out trees. Other artists I know use this brand for the whole painting.

OK for particular purposes
By Pearl Girl
#sweepstakesI am just a hobby artist but I own nearly every brand of soft pastels. I find these Great American soft pastels to be nearly greasy. They often smear when applied. Still, I like some of the colors and I particularly use some of the yellows on the horizon. I think they are generally too expensive. Even though I do use Great American at times, I would not generally recommend them.

Great American Pastel yellow used on horizon
Like 'em lots
These pastels are soft, creamy and a great shape. Rectangular edges are nice for fine details. Chunkier, they are easy to hold. Great for finishing touches.
