Welcome to dickblick
Apply this translucent acrylic ground to paper, board, or any surface you wish. It provides a rough, "gritty" tooth, making it perfect for use with pastel, graphite, chalk or charcoal, and for the preparation of canvas and other supports for pastels.
It can be blended with Golden Acrylic colors for colored grounds, or with Golden Fine or Coarse Pumice Gel to increase tooth.

Excellent surface but light gray
By Underwater Surfer
from Sweet Home, OR
Comments about Golden Pastel Ground:
The resultant surface has a very nice medium grit surface that holds pastels, graphite, and other mediums. The color when dry is similar to the wet color, which is a light gray. It can be colored by adding a little Golden Fluid Acrylic, but too much will reduce the grit. Another alternative is to use an airbrush to spray a light coat of paint on top of the dried surface. This will give you maximum color without changing the surface texture too much.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I add Golden fluid acrylic and paint onto gator board for pastel pieces. Makes a nice underpainting and ground at the same time.

I really needed something to use with my pastels. In particular pastel pencils. I'm still a noob with pastels but quickly realized anything without grit isn't usable. This gets the job done.

This material provides a great texture for your acrylic paintings. I've used it on paper, and canvas and it works great by providing a 3D feel
Excellent product - yay
By Aussie Lyn

I wanted to do an extra long artwork pastel .... no gritty paper was long enough - so I was told about this product. I painted a few coats directly on the board and yay - it worked. Sold the piece quickly too.

For making your own pastel paper-can't beat this product!

It's a great product for beginning pastel artists. Simple, easy to use, and cost effective for making your own paper. Works on many different surfaces.
Layering over oil paint
from Boston MA
We like doing an oil underpainting, putting the pastel ground over it and then working in with pastel to create a finished piece.

Great way to create sanded paper when in a pinch
By Purple Queen
from Hayward, WI
In a recent pastel workshop, we used this product to make our own "sanded" paper. We applied it with a wide, stiff, cheap brush and it dried quickly for use within about a half-hour. The texture is coarse and creates a quick alternative when running out of paper. My instructor advised us to use archival paper and, if it curls from the moisture, to just do another application on the back (you can use plan gesso for that) to flatten it out. Such a great time-saver and cost-saver too.

I apply this over acrylic underpaintings for pastel work. It works well, and you can largely control the amount of tooth you get by applying more or fewer coats. I like that I can make it smooth by applying with a roller or make it directional by applying with a 3" brush. Versatile and interesting!

Excellent pastel ground
from Greensboro, NC
I use this on raw wood and the pastel adheres to the wood much better. I've also tried it on paper, and it works very well. I can also have thicker layers of pastel, and I've found that don't have to use as much spray fixitive. Have recommended this to fellow pastel artists. Will use this for everything in the future.
