Golden Acrylic Mediums offer a range of consistency from pourable to moldable, with various levels of transparency and finish. Experimentation is recommended. Mediums may be used to create glazes, extend paints, build texture, change finishes, or as a gluing agent for collage projects.
Clear Granular Gel
Made with coarse acrylic granules, this gloss acrylic gel is designed to add texture without altering color. It's excellent for making translucent, textural glazes and dries to an extremely rough crushed-glass appearance.
Clear Leveling Gel
A thick, fluid acrylic medium designed to produce an even film with excellent clarity. It has a unique resinous, stringy consistency and dries to a flexible, high gloss film. Blend with Golden Acrylics to produce glazes.
Clear Tar Gel
Designed to produce a stringy, tar-like feel in a colorless gel. The gel is excellent for "dripping" over surfaces. The more it's mixed, the stringier it becomes. Letting the mixture sit before use allows foam bubbles to rise. Blend the gel with Golden Acrylics to add color.
Coarse Molding Paste
An opaque acrylic medium with a sandy texture. For building surfaces or as a ground for drawing media. Retains tool marks and peaks. Crystalline appearance.
Explorer Set of 3
Sample three of Golden's versatile acrylic mediums. The Explorer Set includes a 2 oz (59 ml) bottle of Gloss Glazing Liquid, a 4 oz (118 ml) jar of Molding Paste, and a 4 oz (118 ml) jar of Regular Gel Matte.
Extra Heavy Gel
A very thick acrylic medium, Extra Heavy Gel holds peaks well and is ideal for impasto techniques. Along with the High Solid Gel, it's the thickest of the Golden Gels. Available in Gloss, Matte, and Semi-Gloss.
Extra Heavy Molding Paste
This light gray, semi-opaque texture medium is great for building texture. It retains tool marks and peaks and dries to a slightly translucent appearance. It also mixes cleanly with color.
Create rough, flexible, paper-like surfaces on canvas or board. Use as a ground or a texture.
Fluid Matte Medium
A liquid medium for extending colors, decreasing gloss, and increasing film integrity. Works well with Golden Fluid Acrylics.
Glass Bead Gel
A clear acrylic gel with small, densely packed glass beads. It adds texture and luminous effects.
Great for glazing in fine art painting, this acrylic medium dries slowly, allowing the artist extended periods of working time. Glazing Liquid improves brushability and is useful for wet-in-wet blending. It's also great for creating glazes or faux finishes on interior walls and furniture. Choose Gloss or Satin finish.
A general purpose liquid polymer for creating thin, fast-drying glazes, extending colors, enhancing gloss, and increasing film integrity. It's oil-like and resinous, promoting flow and leveling.
Hard Molding Paste
Provides the hardest, opaque, matte finish. Useful for creating tough, durable finishes for smooth or textured surfaces. Can be carved with hand or powered tools when dry.
Thicker in consistency than Golden Heavy Body Acrylics, these gels hold peaks and dry translucent. They're ideal for thickening, extending colors, altering sheen, and increasing translucency of acrylic paint. Blend them with colors to increase body. Available in Gloss, Matte, and Semi-Gloss.
High Solid Gel
One of Golden's thickest gels, High Solid Gel holds high peaks, useful for simulating oil paint behavior. It contains less water and more acrylic solids, so it shrinks less than other gels. Retains texture, brushstrokes, and tool marks. Available in Gloss and Matte.
Light Molding Paste
Dramatically reduces the weight traditional molding paste would add, while increasing flexibility. Holds peaks and dries to a soft, flexible, opaque, matte finish. Makes an excellent ground for watercolor-like techniques.
This is a general purpose, pourable medium for extending color, decreasing gloss, and increasing film integrity. It can also be used to create a clear ground, instead of gesso.
An off-white, semi-opaque medium for building texture, Molding Paste dries to a hard yet flexible film and has a satin finish. Its consistency is similar to that of Golden Gels, but is slightly more rigid because of its higher density. Molding Paste holds stiff peaks and tool marks to create highly textured surfaces. Use alone or blend with acrylic mediums or colors.
Pumice Gel - Coarse
Dries to an opaque gray porous texture. Has a rough concrete appearance.
Pumice Gel - Extra Coarse
Dries to an opaque gray porous texture. Has a rough concrete appearance.
Pumice Gel - Fine
Dries to a warm gray, translucent, matte, and toothy surface. Suitable as a ground for pencils, pastels, and similar drawing media.
These gels have a consistency similar to Golden Heavy Body Acrylics. They extend paint and regulate translucency without affecting consistency, hold moderate peaks and textures, and are ideal for glazing. Available in Gloss, Matte, and Semi-Gloss.
An additive for slowing the drying (open) time of acrylic paints and mediums. It's useful for "wet-in-wet" techniques and for reducing skinning on the palette.
A waterborne system designed to blend with Golden Acrylic colors for silkscreen application. It increases the working time and retards paint from drying in the screen.
Thinner than Golden Heavy Body Acrylic colors, these gels are moderately pourable, hold only slight peaks, and are ideal for glazing and other techniques that require transparency.
Soft Gels can also be used to create a non-removable isolation coat over any painting. To do so, gels must be thinned with water at a two-to-one ratio and applied prior to any coats of varnish. Available in Gloss, Matte, and Semi-Gloss.
Super Matte Medium
This medium contains an extremely high level of matting agent, so by adding just a little you can effectively reduce gloss and shine without compromising color strength or viscosity. Not intended for use on its own, it should always be blended with acrylic paint.
A concentrated additive for reducing the surface tension of water. Add Wetting Agent (formerly Acrylic Flow Release) to water to improve the absorption of acrylic colors into porous surfaces and achieve rich stains on surfaces such as watercolor paper and unprimed canvas.

Seal with thinned gel medium before varnishing
from Ohio based artist
Comments about Golden Acrylic Mediums:
I always spray seal my finished acrylic paintings with two coats of thinned Golden gloss gel medium, then varnish with their polymer UV varnishes to add a layer of protection and determine the final sheen. On more than one occasion this has saved my bacon. The example in the picture is one instance. While spraying varnish things went bad- I applied the varnish too thick and it puddled. I had no choice but to remove the varnish. But how to do it without disturbing the delicate paintwork underneath? Plain and simple, I was able to do this without ruining the valuable painting strictly because of the barrier of protection the gel medium provided. Best advice I can give? Always use archival practices in your creative process. This is a big consideration if, down the road your work needs to be cleaned and or restored. Golden's web site provides a wealth of information on the use of their products. Highly recommended

To make sculptural art on canvas
from Cambria, CA.
I think it takes many years to evaluate the long term effect of art materials. So far, it's the best solution to varnishing my acrylics.
Great Product for Surfacing My Work
from Seattle, WA
I use this Gel product as an isolation coat on all of my paintings. It offers wonderful juxtaposition to all the tool marks and scratches that make up the details of the paintings. I then remove the shine with steel wool and wax on top of it. This gives my work a unique and beautiful patina.

Easy to work with!

Easy to use and covers exceptionally well.
Nice and gritty...
from Coldwater, MI
I really needed something to use with my pastels. In particular pastel pencils. I'm still a noob with pastels but quickly realized anything without grit isn't usable. This gets the job done.
Golden Is My Favorite!
I can always rely on Golden products and Golden mediums are always consistent. The product does what it claims to do and I know their mediums are the best for my artwork.
Golden Regular Gel Matte #3030-6 is too thick
from The Moon
I'm glad this medium isn't drippy, tacky, and smelly like mod podge however I do think it is a bit too thick. Before trying golden I used dina wakley gel medium and it was the perfect consistency for collage. I didn't have to water it down like with this product. I wanted to try golden because it was less expensive. I thought it would be equivalent to the last medium I tried.I don't want to be too harsh on this product. I'm sure this medium's quality is very good for artists who do want their medium to be this extremely thick, it's just not for me.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Like the heavy gel. However, when I opened it the foil top was crushed to one side and some of the gel had dried into the rim. This made it hard to open; had to clean all the dried gel off (not a quick job); and wound up with bits of dried gel in the usable gel..rather not have that issue.
