Gamblin Oil Painting Ground is the top choice for a new generation of painters looking for a convenient, non-toxic alternative to traditional lead oil grounds. Like all Gamblin products, it has been formulated to exhibit true historic working properties, yet is safer and more permanent.
The binder in Gamblin Oil Painting Ground makes it more flexible and faster-drying than lead/linseed oil grounds, which must dry for six months. Gamblin Oil Ground is ready for painting within a week. And because the percentage of pigments is so much higher than in acrylic gessos, painters only need to apply two coats of Gamblin Oil Ground instead of the recommended four coats of an acrylic gesso.
Cotton or linen canvas primed with Gamblin Oil Painting Ground will be stiffer than canvas primed with an acrylic gesso, yet more flexible than a canvas prepared with a traditional oil primer.
Gamblin Oil Painting Ground is made in the USA, at the company's wind-powered factory in Portland, Oregon.

Very different from gesso, great stuff
Comments about Gamblin Oil Painting Ground:
I've tried all sorts of gesso grounds to help with paint sinking, and realized that any absorption works against paint retaining its luminosity. I worried about adhesion with this oil ground, but it works beautifully as long as you lightly sand the surface after it has cured. Follow the instructions on the Gamblincolors website, and you'll love the result. I apply it with a long palette knife, scraping it on very thinly so that it fills the weave of the canvas and goes on evenly without being too thick. It dries to the touch in a day or two, but I don't paint on it until a week later (as Gamblin advises) so that it is fully cured. The surface is slicker than a chalky gesso, but that's part of why it works so well. Takes some getting-used-to but I love it now.

Awesome surface, hard/messy to use
Yes, I love painting on the surface this creates--especially when applied with a short-nap roller. However, it's very messy to work with and with a longer prep/drying time than your typical gesso. Think ahead two weeks vs. 3 coats fully dry in an afternoon! Also, I followed the instructions of placing thick plastic on the surface and sealing the can very tightly with a hammer. Still, I opened it just a few months later to discover that the top 1/2 inch had dried up. I feel like this product would be better in a tube. If you need an amazing surface for oil paint, this is the bees knees, but make sure you're going to prep enough surfaces to make it worth the trouble, and in case the rest of the product dries up. Tip: buy a cheap 3" trim roller from a home improvement store--with extra disposable rolls.
This is good stuff. I enjoy using it, it performs well.

I use it on stretched canvas that is sized with rabbit skin glue. I put two coats of ground which makes a good solid surface to paint on. I highly recommend this procedure for oil painting. I also prime acrylic primed canvas with Gamblins oil painting ground too.

Great to paint on. But slow to dry, gambling says dries in a week, my experience is closer to a month.

I was feeling the pre gessoed canvases were not allowing my oil colors to remain as brilliant as possible so I decided to treat artboard with this. It makes a great surface and I feel better painting on top of it. I am a Gamblin fan.
I like it!

It's really thick compared to the W&N which I like. Use a plastic scrapper and then roll it on. For me it touch dries within 24 hrs on panel boards. But I love it! It's like linen to cotton, once you use it, you don't want to go back to gesso!

Gamblin Oil Ground

I use the product to prepare boards and canvas for painting in oils. It's very smooth and makes a great surface for oil paints that don't soak into the surface. it can be thinned with a small amount of Gamsol which makes it spread more easily.Without using a few drops of Gamsol it's sticky but thining it with Gamsol makes it much better to work with. The video illustrating how to use it is very helpful.

Wonderful, Fast Drying Ground
I brought this to repaint over some of my old canvasses, I'd been using acrylic gesso but found it couldn't stand up to the oil I was putting over it. Switched to this ground and it's been fantastic. It's ready in just a week and gives excellent tooth for strong brushwork.

So happy to find a safer alternative to lead grounds and long term untested acrylics. It levels smoothly and dries within 24 hours.
