Gamblin FastMatte Alkyd Oil Colors were formulated to offer painters an artists' grade oil color that dries quickly, yet offers the adhesion of a ground, making it excellent as a base layer or for underpainting techniques.
FastMatte's alkyd resin-based binder allows it to dry more quickly naturally, creating a receptive, matte surface for subsequent layers. All colors except Titanium White and Cadmium colors are transparent or semi-transparent in nature, creating the tonal range so important for underpainting techniques.
When applied in thinly painted layers, FastMatte dries in approximately 18 hours. This drying rate allows painters to work throughout a painting session without the oil paints drying on the palette, while at the same time creating a dry surface for the next painting session.
To make FastMatte more fluid for underpainting techniques, thin it with a 50/50 mixture of Gamblin Galkyd Painting Medium and Gamblin Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits. Moderate use of this mixture ensures the adhesion of thinner paint applications while maintaining the matte surface quality.
For a gloss surface, apply a thin glaze or a coat of Gamblin Gamvar Picture Varnish.
The fast drying rate of FastMatte Alkyd Oil Colors makes it well-suited for plein air painters, especially while traveling and transporting freshly painted works.
Gamblin FastMatte Alkyd Oils are completely compatible with other artists' grade oil colors, and speed up their drying time based on the proportion used. FastMatte is also compatible with Gamblin's alkyd-based Galkyd painting mediums. Use with these mediums, however, increases the gloss level of the FastMatte Colors.
This set contains eight 37 ml FastMatte colors, a 37 ml tube of Solvent-Free Gel, and a pre-primed, cradled 6½" × 12" painting panel handcrafted in North America from sustainably forested birch. The colors include Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Permanent, Ultramarine Blue, Phthalo Green, Yellow Ochre, Chromatic Black, and Titanium White.

Gamblin Fast Matte Titanium White Oil Paint
By Studio Aki
from Beaufort, SC
Comments about Gamblin FastMatte Alkyd Oil Colors:
It may be my fault to get this paint without knowing "Fast Matte" mean. I have been painting over 50 years and this is the worst oil paint I have ever used. In less than a hour, this paint get gummy and hard on my palette without adding any type of oil. I have used regular titanium white from same company and was very good. I do not know why they even make this paint. I just wasted my money. Please be careful not to buy "Fast Matte" from Gamblin. The only reason I rate with one star is I can not submit this review with NO star.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I use the white with just a touch of Raw Umber to tone the canvas. Makes an excellent painting surface.

Great product when you need fast paint curing
By Sargent Pepper
from Cambridge, MA
This is the product to use for underpainting when you're planning to apply additional paint layers within a day or so and want to avoid wet-on-wet. Works well for plein air too, when transporting a wet canvas would make a mess of your painting, clothing, or car. Use sparingly on your palette - it gets sticky and unworkable if exposed to the atmosphere too long.
A must have
By Rick the carver
This is used in painting carvings of fowl, and raptors. It works great at aiding in drying without leaving a glossy finish.
Transparent Earth Red...Perfect
from Tucson, AZ
This color, FastMatte Transparent Earth Red is perfect for creating monochrome underpaintings, especially for the desert Southwest.
A great concept BUT
Some of the tubes are so dense that is really, really hard to even squeeze out of the tube. You will definately need to use a thinning medium. I would recommend, but with a caution.
Great sampling of Alkyds
I've been wanting to try alkyds and this kit gave me the chance without having to spend a whole bunch of money. It is a great value and I can get several paintings from it. The mixing gel that comes with the kit is used to increase the flow of the oil colors. This I can see I need a huge tube of. It is a great product. I love the fact that it is a gel and not runny. I will be ordering more of it. Again the kit is great for newbies who want to see what it's all about.

Fast drying oil experiment
By Lilli making messes and art
from North Carolina
I bought this fast drying oil to sketch in my portrait, and get to my black and white and shades of gray part faster. I guess it dries faster. I am not sure how much faster though, but it handled beautifully, and seemed like my regular oils. Of course, I like what Gamblin makes a lot, and use many of their other products. This was an experiment on my part, and I will play with it some more! All in all, it was good stuff, it was really nice, and the price was right! It definitely merits more experimenting!
Gamblin FastMatte dry fast oil paint
from Crescent City, CA
I oil paint with these fast dry oils on canvas. I like this fast drying paint because it dries overnight. Regular oils take too long to dry since we live where we get a lot of rain. Only thing I don't like is the oil that comes out of some paints that you have to get rid of.
A revolution in oil painting
These oil colors are of prime quality and they dry in one or 2 days. They combine the pleasure to paint in oil and the satisfaction to continue painting the following day while your inspiration is still fresh. This paint suits well my way of building layers upon layers.Adding the safflower alkyd fluid medium allows me to paint details and to reduce further the drying time.A great buy for all lovers of oil painting not willing to wait for days before adding glazing
