A Really Good Sketch Journal.
from New Mexico
Comments about Fabriano Artist's Journal:
I've gone through about three of theses books now and I intend to keep using them. The number of pages is the real strong point of this book. I don't feel stressed about wasting paper because there is a ton. Pages rip out easily. I work with watercolor a lot, while the paper does have a tendency to buckle its easy to avoid major ripples if you stumble and give layers a chance to dray at least halfway. Going back and feeling old watercolor sketches the paper seems to have flattened out a good deal. I have never had this paper pill on me. Inks usually don't bleed through unless there is a really heavy application. The cover is thin but whats wrong with a little decorative tape or reinforcement if need be? Personally, The smaller journal can feel a little awkward to use but the larger journal is fine. The Fabriano Classic Artist's Journal is really good for practice, notes, studies, and thumbnails.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

A good sketchbook, but know what you are getting
By Scott Sackett
from Olklahoma City
It's hard to compare the value of this sketchbook because there isn't really anything out there like this. First, it has a paper cover. It's about the paper thickness as paperback book, but it's not slick. So this might not be the sketchbook you take kayaking or hiking during monsoon season.Second, the pages are sewn together and glued to the cover. So it's not superdurable. my last one I had to reglue with some flexible glue. No big deal, but it's still an issue to be aware of. And it doesn't really lie flat.So why did a just buy my second? It feels good in your hand. I bought the larger sketchbook and the combination of size and thickness fits in my hand nicely. It feels like a nicer sketchbook. It has a ton of pages. Almost 400 pages in a sketchbook this light is amazing. The paper is really nice. It's pretty thin, but is fairly smooth with a slight weave in it. It's different. Everybody has Moleskins, I want to carry something a little different. These are kinda hard to find, I don't know if Fabriano still makes them.

For me it's a FabriaNO.
By Not you.
I purchased this journal for its size and thickness. The paper is very limited in the mediums it can take. It's not cheap yet the cover is. I wouldn't say this journal is the worst, however its shortcomings have made me no longer motivated to create art in it.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

The jury's still out
from Portland, OR
I haven't started using this yet but I can say that while it's quite lovely and I can't wait to use the Fabriano paper, and I don't mind the soft covers, I am very disappointed at how there is no way in the world the open book will even attempt to lay flat. I cannot imagine how I'll be able to draw in this book when there is such a large curve on both sides whether at the front, middle or back of the book. Part of it's the binding and the other is the thickness which is what attracted me. Now I regret the purchase.

My Favorite Journal
I absolutely love the Fabriano paper so I knew I'd love it in journal form. The two colors of paper look really unique. I'm new to journal drawing but I have found I have specific requirements and have bought several journals, in an attempt to fill those requirements. I personally, like that the cover is thick paper and not hard bound. It keeps the weight down and the journal open when I'm drawing. I'm left handed and so many journals just will not work, for me. I find that I take my time more and relax into drawing when I draw in this journal. It's a great buy for the price too.

Gorgeous paper! Well loved product
from My studio, Newcastle Australia
I've used a fabriano sketch journal before and, though the cardboard cover doesn't hold up well to robust travel the paper is delicious to work on in pencil, pen, ink and watercolour. I found my old journal and craved a new one - Blick was one of the few sites I could find that actually offered them for sale. I bought two. When I finish them I will buy more. My old one I had rebound in hardback once I finished it.
Absolutely love them

I bought two of these and I am so happy I did. I was looking for a decently sized notebook that had a large number of pages...and then I stumbled upon these. After scouring the internet for any notebook that fit these requirements, it was a miracle finding these. They fit the build of my wants and are great quality. Even more than that, they were a steal! I couldn't find a product that can hold a candle to this in quality and price. I'm so completely satisfied. Buy them! Buy all of them!

I used wood ( DB Birch panel cut to size ) covered with cloth, and joined the blank book to it. For a custom blank Book.

deceptively sturdy paper
Initially I wasn't impressed with the paper in this book for watercolors; it's thin and appears to be quite flimsy. However after working in the book for a few days I've come to love it. Yes, it does buckle like mad, but the it does not stain (with watercolors), and you can put uncounted layers of color on it without the paper breaking down in the least. I've come to think of it as miracle paper! I also like it for colored pencil. Re: the paper cover - I don't find that a drawback at all, and i love the slightly larger than 4" x 6" size.

Almost perfect - Read reviews first
By Serenity Lithae

Everything about this sketchbook/journal is perfect except the cover. I thought it looked like a normal hardcover in the picture, so I didn't think to check reviews. It's not hardcover, it's made out of about average thickness paper, only a little thicker than the paper itself inside. Not sure if over 20 dollars is worth a paperback... Though it does have more paper than most, and everything else about it is really nice, it's certainly quality made, the paper is very nice, it has a bookmark as well like most actual hardcover sketchbooks.Luckily I wanted to get this one to use as a daily journal for writing and sketching, like something I would do in the morning and night so I shouldn't need to travel with it much, I fear it would get ruined easily with the flimsy cover. I also bought a few other brands of smaller travel books, like Hand Book the tiny Pebtalic, which are just great with nice hard hard covers, but not as much paper like this one has. Which is good for long term use.All in all, it's worth it if it fits your uses, but be wary of the flimsy cover if that affcets how you will use it. Thinking of adding something like the person above, to strengthen it, but not sure how to do that without ruining the aesthetic.
