Da Vinci's "Maestro" designation is reserved for brushes manufactured using male winter Siberian Kolinsky Red Sable fur. These are top-of-the-line, high quality brushes.
The extra sharp needle-like point and longer tapered hair length result in faster action at the tip and the tightest snap at the point. Expect superior spring and control, plus unsurpassed water-carrying performance.
All brushes have plated brass, seamless ferrules. Brush hairs are glued into the ferrule by a dosing machine. Then the ferrule is filled with a modern component-glue. After the drying and curing process, all the hairs are firmly positioned. Da Vinci uses only nickel- and gold-plated brass ferrules, which are rust resistant.
Before leaving the factory, each brush is carefully checked to make sure the finishing of the brush-head is impeccable and the ferrule is firmly attached to the handle. Carefully packaged, it will begin its journey, perhaps over mountains and oceans, to one of Da Vinci's loyal customers making art in the wide, wide world.
For three generations, Da Vinci has created the highest quality artist and specialty brushes. Today, the family owned business offers the largest selection of artist brushes in the world. Each brush is crafted with pride to Da Vinci's exacting standards. Using the finest raw materials available, skilled brushmakers draw on both centuries-old wisdom and input from contemporary professional artists. Utilizing the latest technical innovations, they create brushes of unsurpassed beauty, quality, and endurance.
Hans-Friedrich Defet was well-educated in the traditions of brushmaking, learning from both his grandfather and father the history of brushmaking in Nuremberg, Germany. Until the end of the 17th century, each artist had to make his own painting tools. During the 18th century, an ambitious crafts guild started to master the art of brush binding, relieving the artist of this burden. As this guild increased its expertise through experience and experimentation, the young trade was soon booming in the commercial town of Nuremberg. The city soon gained a worldwide reputation for brushmaking.

I really wanted to love it
from Long Beach, CA
Comments about Da Vinci Brushes Da Vinci Maestro Kolinsky Brushes:
I did a fair amount of research before buying a new #6 round brush. I wanted sable: a brush that would hold moisture and retain a nice point. The DaVinci holds and dispenses pigment and water well, but I really struggle to get a good point. When I switch to my Winsor & Netwon Series 7, that skirmish dissapates. Maybe I just ended up with a brush on the low end of their quality control, but I am not impressed. I'll still keep working with the brush, to see if I can become its master, but I'll look at non-Da Vinci when I purchase again.

I enjoy using this brush and intend to buy another size.

Comments about Da Vinci Maestro Kolinsky Special Inlaid Liner:
I purchased a size 8 and size 5. They meet my needs and I am pleased with the weight of the brush. I prefer a little heavier feel of a brush and it is very comfortable in my hand. I was unable to find this brush in a local store, so ordered from Blick. I was able to purchase them at a discounted sale price plus free shipping, so I was pleased with the value. They arrived a few days after ordering, however the size 5 brush was damaged in shipping. It was shipped without a protective cover on the hairs and in a bubble envelope. The hairs were bent and not acceptable to use. I called customer service and they immediately sent me a replacement and shipping label for return of the damaged brush. The replacement came in perfect condition. I was very pleased with the no hassle customer service and their attitude in handling my replacement. Great customer service. Will definitely order from Blick again.

Essential for my work

Comments about Da Vinci Maestro Kolinsky Brushes "The Miniaturist" Series 1505:
As a botanical artist, I use these brushes to distribute color in small areas, from dark to light in a nice, even, graded tone. I have had two similar brushes for at least fifteen ears and they were finally wearing out. I was happy to find one on the Block site and very happy with it once I received it.

Excellent Kolinsky watercolor travel-brush
from Laguna Niguel Ca
Comments about Da Vinci Maestro Travel Brush:
This is my very first Kolinsky brush, and I'm liking it very much. I was looking for a retractable brush for travel, but soon found that there is no such thing as a retractable watercolor brush. Also, I am a beginning art student and don't know much about brushes. The product I purchased has a handle that unscrews from the bottom of the brush and becomes a cap, you then place the cap over the brush tip. I have a problem putting the cap on the tip because the hairs become fluffy when dry and require dampening in order to fit in the cap without damaging the hairs. I wish I could find a brush that when I twisted the handle the tip would retract inside the handle, then be topped off with a cap. Until I invent such a brush, this product is working exceptionally well.

Excellent brush even for a fussy botanical artist

Comments about Da Vinci Maestro Kolinsky Sable Round Series 10:
Painting detailed botanicals requires a brush that keeps a good point and behaves reliably. No stray hairs. This brush does that. For places where I need a brush that holds even more water, but behaves just as precisely, I use the series 35 brush instead. These two, series 10 and series 35, are my favorites.

This new da Vinci Maestro brushes are not very good to me.
I've been looking for these brushes for a while. My old ones are still much better than these. I'm not sure what happened to the quality of these. I'd heard there was a problem getting them into the country. I've extremely disappointed in these new Da Vinci Meastro brushes.

A Fantastic Brush
By Ann, an Author

I love this brush. In the larger sizes particularly, it can be used successfully for a variety of brushstrokes from broad to fine. In my watercolour kit I only carry it and a mop brush. Unfortunately the one I just bought was a replacement for one I lost on a field trip, but I was willing to pay the large cost because I couldn't do without this in my paintbox.
