Developed as an economical alternative to pure Kolinsky Red Sable, Da Vinci Cosmotop Sable Mix F Brushes are a mix of Kolinsky Red Sable, Ox Hair (sometimes called Sabeline), and Russian Fitch (Black Sable), along with small amounts of synthetic hair.
This exclusive combination brings together all the benefits of the finest natural hairs for watercolor: the pointing and edging of Sable, the water-holding capacity and wash strokes of Ox, and the stiffness and durability of Fitch.
When it comes to watercolor brushes, Cosmotop Sable Mix F Brushes are simply a great value — especially in the larger sizes.

Best brush ever
from Brookhanen, NY
Used for watercolor painting. Has the softness of real sable and a slight stiffness of synthetic but not too much. I always found the real hair brushes too soft. Theses are perfect. They do not lift the previous washes off the paper like a synthetic brush can. Very easy to use for glazing and layering .mgood point. Well made. The handles are nice as well. I ordered one, loved it so I ordered more sizes from 6 to 24! Will get them all... Need them in flat version as well.

Best so far
from Christiansburg, VA
This is the best brush I have used so far. It has spring, holds lots of color, and comes back to its pointy shape easily. The handle has flat sides, so it doesn't roll off the table as easily.
My foray into quality brushes
By Malone the aspiring watercolorist
from Piffard, NY
This is a very fine brush. It flows beautifully and holds water well. I used an inexpensive brush prior to purchasing this one and was shocked at the difference. A quality brush is definitely worth the investment. There are many quality brushes available but this one is a sure thing at a fair price. I will purchase this brush in other sizes. What a wonder discovery!

Top notch synthetic.
from Nashville, TN
This brush holds a lot of water, has plenty of snap and points very well. I have sable brushes, and these perform better than some of those.
Smooth as silk: Da Vinci Sable mix brush
By hbc cathy
from St. John's, Newfoundland
The DaVinci Cosmotop Sable mix F brushes were recommended by artist Birgit O'Connor in a workshop. The large #30 brush was superlative in being able to deliver lush, dense washes of pigment in layers without disturbing previous washes. The results were excellent even with very granulating pigments. A similar sized synthetic brush used for comparison, could not deliver.
The brushes hold water. Very smooth strokes.

So love it, I have a spare of each
from San Diego, CA
I am a beginner in watercolor. I nearly gave up on the medium and thought of sticking to figure drawing only to discover I have been using so so paper, brushes and paints.I purchased Da Vinci brushes as it is highly recommended by website Handprint.com (Handprint Watercolor) and author Birgit O'Connor and some featured artists on Watercolorpainting.com.This particular line, Series 5550 Cosmotop Mix-F, is my favorite, along with Series 1520 Finest Sable and Series 36 Kolinsky Rotmarder. The 5550 Cosmotop Mix-F has the right amount of stiffness and is like a German car in cornering tight spaces. Point and water capacity are excellent but not as excellent as my 1520 and 36 series but still the 5550 is my all around brush. There is also Cosmotop Mix-B, but the Mix-F is far more superior. I have tried both. THe only difference is the Mix-B has squirrel hair whereas the Mix-F has sabeline.I so love 5550 that I purchased rounds size 14, 12, 10, 8 and have a spare of each just in case it gets out of the market as it is now only sold by Dick Blick online. I have compared their brushes with Escoda and Isabey and the lacquered handle alone is by far the best I've seen. Da Vinci 1520's red sable is also longer and thicker than Escoda and Isabey's same red sable line.I have tried all these Da Vinci brushes1520 Finest Red Sable rounds36 Kolinsky Rotmarder rounds5550 Cosmotop Mix-F rounds5580 Cosmotop Mix-B rounds5590 Squirrel rounds5830 Cosmotop Mix-B flat418 Squirrel roundsI have not seen or used a W&N brush but I have physically compared my Da Vinci brushes with Escoda and Isabey and I must say it's like owning a BMW or Audi. I am not considering anymore brand aside from Da Vinci.P.S. Da Vinci (brush company) is not related to the Da Vinci paint company.
