Da Vinci Black Goat Hair Wash Mottler brushes are similar in softness to squirrel hair but at a fraction of the cost. They will hold lots of water and can be used for washing, varnishing, imitating, and priming.
These brushes offer great value in large sizes for watercolorists, and the rustproof steel ferrule assures long life.

Comments about Da Vinci Brushes Da Vinci Black Goat Hair Wash Mottler:
I bought this brush because I was looking for a squirrel hair alternative. At the same time I also picked up a Prinston Neptune synthetic brush to compare this to.Unfortunately I did not have to compare them, I am extremely disappointed with this brush. This brush doesn't hold a lot of water, the bristles splay out, its difficult to move around objects you don't want to paint. I don't like the feel of this brush, not sure how to best describe it but it feels like it drags on the paper. I don't think these live up to the product description, I don't own a squirrel hair for comparison, but I feel there are better options on the market. The size 20 brush I got is not 29mm wide, someone dropped the ball in getting the right information on the website, not having bought a Da Vinci before I ordered the brush based on the measurements and the 20 is 20mm (as the size suggests). This brush is tiny, they didn't even bother to varnish the handle.Unless you've used goat hair before, and liked it, you might want to give theses a pass.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This brush is the absolute worst I've ever used, and as a result I returned it. This brush is a shedder and as such it is completely unusable.
Merchant response: Thank you for your review. As with all natural hair brushes, some initial shedding is to be expected with these mottlers, and with goat hair this is especially pronounced. Proper preparation of the brush prior to use is important, and we're always happy to advise customers who may be unfamiliar with the process. Of course, your satisfaction is our most important concern, and we were happy to accept the brush in return. If we can be of further assistance, as always, please don't hesitate to ask!

An excellent performing brush

These brushes do not shed hair like many others and the hairs are packed uniformly into the ferrule so brushwork is smooth.
