Chroma Atelier Interactive Mediums

These fine products from Chroma allow you to gain control over the painting process. They make working with acrylics easier and allow you more flexibility without requiring you to learn new techniques.

Acrylic Glazing Liquid — Specially formulated for creating translucent glazes, this low-viscosity medium slightly extends the open time of acrylic paints while promoting their translucency, flow, and leveling. It imparts a rich, glossy, oil-like sheen that is waterproof when dry.

Binder Medium — This water-based acrylic emulsion is used for preparing and sealing acrylic painting surfaces. It promotes good adhesion of paint and prevents moisture loss into the substrate. It is also used for isolation and barrier coats between layers.

Clear Painting Medium — Chroma Atelier Clear Painting Medium is a mid-viscosity medium that lets you dilute acrylic paint to a smoother consistency without altering its sheen. The high water content extends working time without the need to use a water sprayer.

Fast Medium/Fixer — This product speeds the painting process when the artist does not need extra time —it’s great for layering. Also use it to reinforce a tender layer in preparation for scratch-back or scraping techniques.

Gloss, Satin, and Matte Mediums — Offered in your choice of three finishes, these general-purpose, mid-viscosity mediums are ideal for extending colors, adding translucency, promoting flow, leveling, and glazing. They're also great for adjusting gloss levels. Either mix them directly with acrylic paints or use them as a sealing layer before overpainting.

Heavy Gel — This thick, fast-drying, waterbased acrylic gel is designed to exaggerate paint structure and sharpen textural edges. It can also be used as a very strong adhesive for bonding heavy objects. Either mix it directly with acrylic paints or apply it on top of a paint layer for transparent textural effects. It can be overpainted once dry. Choose Matte or Gloss (Gloss was formerly known as Impasto Gel).

Molding Paste — This very thick, textural paste can be used to create exaggerated structure within artwork. It offers the same flexibility as Atelier paints, and can be used at any stage in the painting process. Molding Paste dries white. Mix it with paint for a colored ground, or paint over it after it dries.

Pouring Medium — Create puddles, drips, ribbons, and more. This medium makes pouring techniques easy and fun. Simply mix it with Atelier Interactive Acrylic or Free Flow and pour onto a flat painting surface. The medium thins paint so it pours easily to form smooth, even puddles. It increases color transparency, which enhances paint layering effects, and dries to a beautiful gloss finish. When dry, the paint film is flexible and durable. Create acrylic skins for collage by pouring on plastic sheets, then peeling off the dry paint. Although the medium appears milky in the bottle, there's minimal color shift from wet to dry.

Regular Gel — Available in both Gloss and Matte finishes, this smooth, buttery acrylic gel can be used to extend acrylic paints and adjust their gloss and transparency without altering their consistency. An ideal glazing medium, it also holds textures and moderate peaks for impasto effects. Mix it directly with acrylic paints or apply it on top of a paint layer (its milky color becomes transparent when dry).

Retarder Medium — Use this retarder in very dry conditions. Mix 1 part retarder to 10 parts water.

Slow Medium — Use Slow Medium to extend the wet blending time, producing a smooth, mid-viscosity paint in small amounts. It is useful for glazing and other techniques requiring longer working time and thinner paint application. It also allows re-blending of paint that feels dry to the touch.

Thick Slow Medium — This product extends the wet blending time and slows the drying process of Atelier Interactive Artists’ Acrylics. Its creamy, paint-like consistency and ability to absorb more water means that it can be used to spread and dilute paint without becoming thin or runny. This makes it well suited to artists who tend to over-use the water sprayer.

Universal Medium/Varnish — Excellent for glazing, this medium reduces viscosity and improves brushability. It can also be used as a varnish (adding water results in different levels of sheen, from low to high gloss).

Unlocking Formula — Use Unlocking Formula as a paint layer to permit blending paint back in or wiping away sections of applied paint. It can also extend wet blending time. It’s easy to apply using the Water Sprayer.

Water Sprayer — Produces a fine, controlled mist that keeps Atelier Interactive Acrylics workable for as long as you wish using wet-in-wet and wet-over-damp techniques. Use with distilled water or Atelier Unlocking Formula.
