Lead-free Amaco Velvets are opaque underglazes which have the appearance of velvet when left unglazed.
Velvets will become opaque after three coats. When glazed with transparent matte glaze they will assume a soft, satin finish. The colors will intensify when covered with a clear transparent gloss glaze, but will lose their matte surface quality.
Velvets fire true to color from the jar and may be intermixed with other colors. They may be brushed on mature fired bisque before applying a covering glaze. These underglazes are safe for spray application. Velvets tolerate a wide firing range. Fire to Cone 06-10 (1855°F–2381°F, 1013°C–1305°C).
Colors can be assorted by size for quantity pricing.
Some colors vary at higher temperatures. Please refer to the Resources tab of this page to download a PDF of Amaco's color variation chart for colors at Cone 5 and Cone 10.
Colors are not dinnerware safe unless applied and fired under Amaco LG-10 Clear glaze.

Comments about Amaco Lead-Free Velvet Underglazes Classroom Packs:
I am so excited about the use of under glazes! I'm still new at them. Light pink burned out at cone 6. See pic, on the bottom of the bowl.Colors don't bleed or smear like stains. They're easy to use. I let them dry between coats and colors. A fantastic way to get color and art on your clay! When the underglazes arrived, the seal on few of them had broken. And some are packaged inconsistently. Some seals are different than others.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Dark Gray is more green

Love the underglazes as a whole. Most of the colors are true but the dark gray is more of a greenish medium gray.

Love working with amaco underglazes. Colors are amazing
I love the diversity of colors offered. Dick Blick has excellent service. I only wish they would secure the jars in the box occasionally the underglazes arrive with cracked lids.

I am really enjoying my set of velvet underglazes as I detail many of my hand built and wheel pieces. As a beginner it's great to have the ability to mix colors to get just the right color and also to have the variety in small bottles. Great product!
as a profesional to a profesional - best material u can find

I use Amaco Lead-Free Velvet Underglazes while working with porcelain (mostly) as well as with clay. Sometimes I'm using it as overglaze colors, the result is not equal to the underglaze effect, but it depends what u wanna gain from it. Amaco Lead-Free Velvet Underglazes makes the life of ceramicst so much easier, beacause it covers the surface smoothly and in one firing u can get in many colors the whole work done. Moreover u can correct and correct the drawing (for example) as much as you like and after the firing it will remain almost the same as it was before the firing. It is amazing. I am using it over 7 years and till this day I haven't found anything better or equally to the quality cheaper. Maybe the downside of this product is that different colors need to applied differently thick if you want to sustain the smoothiness because some of them are more likely to burndown due to the firing process. But hey, life of ceramicist ist always full of suprises and that's why we always need to make samples and probs.

Amaco ceramic underglazes stay put where applied, even when fired. They offer controlled designs and come in a variety of formats; liquid, semi-moist, pastel stick and pencil. With underglaze, you can achieve a wide range of effects and detailed lines that you can't get with regular glazes.
