Our Tempera Paint Care & Storage Tips

.

Tempera paints and poster paints intended for children and classroom use often contain organic binders and are subject to spoilage and degradation if not used or stored properly, or used within the recommended period of time. While a slight odor is natural, a strong, very unpleasant odor indicates the paint has spoiled. It should be discarded.

Proper Storage:

  • Store paint in a cool, dry place.
  • Extreme temperatures (above 90°F or below 32°F) can harm the paint.
  • Remove the cardboard piece from the lid when storing, especially in hot or humid conditions.
  • Date and rotate paint stock, using the oldest first.
  • Open paint containers should be used within six months. Use unopened paint containers within two years.
  • If paint is near its shelf life when opened, use it promptly.

Prevent Contamination:

  • Portion paint into smaller, resealable containers as needed.
  • Avoid working directly from the original product container. Do not place brushes, hands, used pumps, used paint, or different types of paint in the original container.
  • Do not dilute paint in the original container.
  • Use clean utensils when handling paint.
  • Tightly seal the cap between uses.
