Graphite Writing Pencils

Graphite pencils have a core made up of a mixture of graphite and clay (binders such as wax or polymer may also be used). By varying the graphite to clay ratio, pencil makers adjust the core “hardness” — usually identified by a number (2, 2-1/2, or 3) or letters (HB, 2B, H, or F). How a graphite pencil feels as you move it across the paper depends upon the blend and ratio of those two products — the more clay there is, the harder and lighter a pencil will be; the more graphite there is, the darker and softer it will be.

Shop Blick for Staedtler, Palomino Blackwing, and Faber-Castell pencils, plus graphite writing pencils from Paper Mate, Ticonderoga, Dixon, Crayola, General's, and other top pencil makers — for every application and every hardness grade. Choose from a wide variety of hardness grades: 12B–3B (very soft for drawing); 2B, B, HB, H, 2H (classic hardness grades for writing and sketching); and 3H–10H (very hard pencils for technical drawing and cartography).
