Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between drawing paper and sketch paper?

Sketch paper is typically lighter weight and is usually made from alpha-cellulose. It is suitable for quick studies and initial sketches. Drawing papers are intended for final work, so they'll be heavier weight and are generally higher quality. Some drawing papers may be 100% cotton, but you'll rarely see 100% cotton in a sketch paper.

  • Can I convert paper weight in lbs. to gsm?

When paper weight is noted in pounds, it refers to the weight of 500 sheets (a ream) of a certain size of the paper. This means that a 184lb paper may be the same thickness as a 140lb paper where reams of different basis sizes were weighed. In other words, without knowing the basis size, conversion is not possible. Grams per square meter (gsm) is generally a more consistent unit of measure, because it reflects the weight of one square meter of a single sheet, without regard to the variable of size.
