Pyrometric cones measure heatwork in a kiln. Made from the same ceramic materials as the pottery pieces being fired, they respond to firing in the same way clays and glazes do. Cones are made for a range of heatwork measurements spanning cone 022 to cone 12, and four firing ranges — ultra-low fire, low-fire, mid-fire, and high-fire. To choose the correct pyrometric cones for your purposes, consider the cone numbering system, which has a zero in the center. The cones farthest left of zero are for lower heatwork than those closer to zero. For example, cone 06 is much cooler than cone 6.
