Wedging Boards

To wedge clay means to cut it into workable pieces and then manipulate it to expel any air bubbles trapped in the clay. If not done thoroughly, any remaining air bubbles with cause a ceramic piece to explode in the kiln, damaging the piece and the kiln. Although many pre-mixed pottery clays are already de-aired (i.e., wedged), it's always a smart move to have wedging boards in the pottery studio or classroom.

Blick offers a variety of options for wedging clay, from small wedging boards to large clay wedging tables. Choose from small or large canvas-covered wedging boards, plaster and canvas boards with wire, plaster boards, plaster tables, or a large wedging table with a solid maple apron and legs, a canvas-covered top, and a clay cutter.
