Carving Materials

Blick offers sculptors four basic types of carving materials: carving foam, carving stone, plaster and Hydrocal, and wood for carving. The easiest to carve, balsa foam and EPS (also known as Expanded Polystyrene — or Styrofoam) are the softest materials, making them ideal for younger students in classroom settings. Carving stones are either soft or medium-soft stones such as alabaster, soapstone, or simulated carving stone. Plaster, casting stone, and Hydrocal (which is 30–40% stronger than plaster) are easier to work with and may take details better than other carving materials. Woods for carving are all categorized as soft woods (balsa, basswood, birch, and pine), but require sharper tools than other carving materials.
