A paddle paintbrush has short bristles crimped into a wide ferrule in a paddle shape, and attached to a short handle. Most commonly used to spread thick mediums and paints such as acrylics and water-mixable oils, paddle paint brushes are also excellent for smoothing, smudging, and scumbling. Its broad, flat surface is ideal for carrying the delicate leaf from the gilder’s cushion and laying it onto a prepared surface.
