Composition is one of the great puzzles of watercolor painting. Watercolor by Design solves that puzzle by showing artists how to create innovative paintings using 12 classic design motifs, grouped by type — cruciform, horizontal bar, vertical bar, checkerboard, asymmetric, staggered grids, radial, cantilever, pyramid, frame-in-frame, allover pattern, and floating shapes.

The properties and impact of each motif are explained and reinforced with six variations for each motif.
