Welcome to dickblick
This smooth, light rubbing pad is made of bamboo bark. Used for wood block printing, the strong grain of its tough surface allows the artist to convey pressure firmly and efficiently to the paper.
Its origins can be traced to use in traditional Japanese woodcut printing or Ukiyo-e, a genre of Japanese woodblock prints and paintings produced between the 17th and 20th centuries.
The bamboo barens measure 4-3/4" (121 mm) and 3-7/8" (98 mm) in diameter.

Great baren for beginners
from Columbia, SC
Comments about Yasutomo Bamboo Baren:
The 3-7/8" bamboo baren is a great baren for beginners at an awesome price! I have a wooden knob I use for smaller pieces with fine details, but I find that when working on larger prints the bamboo baren is more comfortable, and easier to control than a wooden spoon. The traditional Japanese style of the baren also adds a very nice aesthetic aspect to the print making process.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Does what it's supposed to
By Q the painter-printmaker
I bought both sizes of the bamboo bare to use for encaustic monoprinting. I can spot touch the paper without burning fingertips. I chose the bamboo so I wouldn't have plastic touching the heat.

I have enjoyed my bamboo sheathed barens for about 2 years now. When relief or block printing, sometimes more or less pressure is needed. Inovart and other rubber type linos need less pressure when burnishing, whereas wood and hard linos require more pressure. Also, the viscosity of the ink also decides how much pressure is needed. This baren allows the most control in applying various pressures. The other hand grip types are hard to control for light pressures. And again, this baren allows the most control for hand printing on block printing papers. I do use my etching press and platen press, but for hand burnishing, this is my go-to baren.

Can't beat the price
from Chico CA
This baren doesn't look like much, but it's a nice flat surface and inexpensive enough to have several around.

Better have small hands
You better have small hands or fingers to use this Barren. It's constructed well, and is really unique. It is a nice addition to any printer's studio or workshop. But I can't get my fingers under the handle and that means I can only hold it by my fingertips and apply moderate pressure. If you have small hands or only want to apply moderate pressure, then this is a great addition.

Just starting out in moku hanga, I didn't want to spend the big bucks for a traditional baren. These are good quality for beginners/students, and give the feel that is needed for the printing process.
it works well, sturdy, great price
from Gulfport, Florida
I am using it for dry point and monotype prints with out a press. It works great and cost less that what I can get locally.

These work wonfully for block printing.
Hardly Used, Falling Apart
By Connie in Humboldt County
from Fortuna, CA
I used to have one of these, a number of years ago. So sorry I got rid of it. The replacement, purchased earlier this year, has begun to fall apart already. And it's hardly been used. Around the edges where the bamboo wraps around whatever's inside, that's where it has torn. This item is very cheaply made these days. I wouldn't recommend.
