It broke after 6 months
from Northfield, MA
Comments about X-Acto Powerhouse Electric Pencil Sharpener:
It was working great for about 6 months, then one of the metal teeth broke and it started clunking every time I sharpened a pencil. While it technically works with the clunking, it does not get as sharp of a point. I also think this is making my primas break more often, though it's hard to tell if it's more than prismas normally break (grrr). I think for a "powerhouse' sharpener, it should be able to last longer than 6 months. Also, it made a big mess every time I emptied the tray.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Get to the point please!
from Mount Prospect, Illinois
Because I work predominately in colored pencil, I must have a very sharp point on my pencils at all times. When laying down my colors, my electric pencil sharpener is right there within reach which is very convenient. I have used many types of sharpeners, like the battery operated and all shapes and sizes of hand-heldones but none worked for very long. I got tired of chewed up pencils and broken leads, so I went to Blicks online and checked out what it had to offer for a reasonable price (price is important to me).Anyway, to get to the point (get it, "point") I am extremely happy with my Exactot Powerhouse Electric Pencil sharpener. I get a clean sharp point, no broken leads, and it is easy to keep clean! The only drawback I guess, is that I have to empty out the shaving receptacle!
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have been using some really run down sharpening machines. This one sharpens like a dream! I haven't had it long, but it's consyruction seems to be sturdier and stronger than others.
Good for colored pencils
So far it's worked out great for my colored pencils (both polychromos and the softer prismas). I think the angle of the pencil is a tiny bit steep but I haven't had a problem with the point breaking (the waxy prismas will have the occasional tip breakage but never with polychromos). At first I thought I was losing a lot of my pencil with each sharpening but it's just the steep angle that makes it look so much shorter. My one complaint is that it's kind of big and takes up a lot of my workspace, but if it lasts as long as it promises then not a huge issue. I haven't owned any other brands so I can't make any comparisons.

Great product for achieving a very fine point. Especially great with colored pencils. Care has to be taken to avoid excessive sharping.
Noisy and Ineffective

I bought this expecting that if I paid a higher price for better made machine, it would last longer and perform better. Shortly after purchase, it stopped working correctly. It makes a grinding noise and chops the pencils. Very disappointed. Hesitant to buy a new one and incur more shipping costs.
Merchant response: The sharpener you received may be defective. Our Customer Care team would be happy to assist you with a return or exchange. A member of our team will be contacting you shortly.

I was really hoping I would love this sharpener- and for the first few weeks, I did. It was giving my pencils and amazingly sharp point that I could never get with any hand held sharpener. It was fast, clean and easy to use. Because of the other reviews, I was extremely careful with it, hoping maybe they'd just been pushing it too hard or had been rough on theirs. I'm a professional Artist, so I sharpen my pencil often, but it's nowhere near classroom level use. I only sharpen graphite pencils and made sure it was never jostled. Nevertheless, about 6 weeks after I got it, it just died. It made a sound like it was sharpening, but nothing happened. It can't be dismantled so I couldn't look inside to fix it. I called Blick and they were great - they apologized and sent me a new one. I hoped it was a fluke and I'd love my new one as much as the first one before it stopped working. Unfortunately my excitement turned to disappointment when I went to sharpen my pencils and the new one doesn't get them sharp, even when I push past the breakage guard - they get just slightly better than dull. It's as though this is a used machine and the blades are dull. I'm so disappointed...I really loved the first one and would like to try again, but I don't want to shell out another $30 plus shipping if the product doesn't work.
Merchant response: We are sorry to hear that the replacement sharpener did not perform as well as expected. Our Customer Care team will be in touch to assist you further.
Does a nice job quietly...
from Jeff City, MO
Was less expensive on your website and works great so far. It's quiet, which is nice for the classroom.
from Clifton, NJ
I can't speak to this product's durability since I've only had it a few weeks but it seems to work well. Although I wouldn't describe its sharpening mechanism as smooth, it consistently delivers a sharp point to all of my charcoal pencils, even the notoriously fragile 6B ex. soft.
Poor Value for the Cost
By Annoyed Art Teacher
Isn't there anyone out there that can design a sharpener that will last a whole school year? As an art teacher one would expect a better quality for the amount of dollars spent. I have this sharpener less than two months and it is now noisy, unbalanced, and doesn't sharpen pencils evenly. It chews them up.
