The carbon pencil is the perfect combination of charcoal and graphite. It has a fine grain, and goes on smoothly and precisely in rich, velvety, matte black lines. Carbon pencils have a consistent softness, for superior blending and texture.

The 5 mm core is encased within a natural cedar wood barrel, making the pencils easy to use, and easy to sharpen for detail work. They are available in four degrees of hardness — B (hardest), 2B, 4B, or 6B (softest).

Pencils are pre-sharpened.

I draw from life with these and adore them. They have a smooth, flowing feel, can go from barely-there to very bold, and are simply a joy to use. I've tried charcoal pencils, Conté pencils, other carbon pencils -- and nothing compares to Wolff's.

Because there's no wax in these, they layer well with charcoal and pastels, and I use them for fine details such as eyes and noses in pastel animal portraits. They blend in beautifully. They also make a nice wash if you go over them with a brush and water.

Wolff's leads are a lot less brittle than other charcoal/carbon pencils I've owned, but I do still have to sharpen them by hand with a knife. I've yet to find a sharpener that won't snap the leads. To me, that's not worth quibbling about since I sharpen everything by hand anyway, but if you're new to these kinds of pencils it's a good thing to know.

These pencils are great for doing puzzles in puzzle books. The depth of the black makes it easier to see the characters - letters and numbers. The only thing that would make them better would be to have a sharpener (hand held)for making the right "point" !!!!!!!!!!!! Love them!

This is a great product with practice. I use it when layering on sketches & drawings. The line value is a little more solid and consistant than plain charcoal, where a well defined line is needed. Use for shading and effects is also very good.
