Much better priced than on specific artists' sites. Plenty in one box to last a very long time (years?).

This was my second attempt at trying vine charcoal and all I can say is "Wow!" This product is so much better than the NITRAM charcoals I utilized simply due to the consistency in the charcoal application. For the price these are hard to beat. The HARD charcoal is really hard, but you can sharpen to a needle point and use them much like graphite pencils.
TOTALLY different results than using a charcoal pencil
I've never used vine or willow charcoal before so I decided to splurge and bought a box each of Hard and Extra Soft vine charcoal.I discovered that it helps to sand/sharpen the ends before you start drawing, at least when using he Hard vine charcoal. Once you break that "edge" the charcoal lays down really soft and it's surprisingly easier to erase and lift off the paper than when I use a charcoal pencil. I'm very happy with how smooth the charcoal feels when it goes across the paper's surface and it seems to lack the "gritty" feel I get whenever I use a regular charcoal pencil. One can get a really broad range of values just from using the two Hard and Extra soft combined. Takes a little getting used to in regards to handling the sticks but overall, I really like the way this charcoal lays down and how "nostalgic" it appears upon a finished product.
Great charcoal drawing tools
from Fresno CA
Vine charcoal is so great because you can almost erase it with a rub of your finger. I love using it for sketching in my drawing and then use the more permanent charcoal pencils over that. Also it makes a great low value shadowing under the more dark values and comes off where needed with a little touch of the kneaded gum eraser. This makes the vine charcoal invaluable for charcoal drawings. I even use it under pastel painting for a fast and easy drawing tool. I like the soft rather than the extra soft which breaks too easily, because I can get a nice dark shadow with minimal effort.

The soft charcoal is great in my life drawing class. Easy to erase with your fingers. Love the way it sharpens with sand paper.

I use this product to sketch outlines for my oil painting.Must say I was impress with the huge box this small item was shipped in. Mailing must have cost more than the item.
I would buy from blick again
The products I bought was oil paint. The oil paints are great to use when mixing them together. They are a little pricer than other oil paints but they are worth it if you want to get a great painting.
great teacher aid to teach pressure sensitivity
from New York, NY
I recommend creating masking tape "handles" for increased control--and for younger children break sticks into smaller segments. Vine and Willow charcoal is a great tool to teach students of all ages pressure sensitivity; the value (brightness, darkness) changes depending on the degree of pressure. Also, there's a built in control of error, because the stick will break if you are not gentle enough. The packs are definitely the best deal. The Winsor & Newton brand is particularly rich, lush in range.
