This is a high-quality canvas manufactured to Winsor & Newton's exacting standards.

Each roll of medium-grain 8 oz natural cotton duck has been coated with acid-free sizing and two coats of highly pigmented acrylic primer.

Its heavier weight makes it ideal for all techniques. Use with oils (including water-mixable oils), acrylics, and alkyds. Balanced absorbency and tooth prevent sinking of oil colors and offers better adhesion.

The rolls are packaged in reusable plastic bags.

This canvas will bleed through. It is probably fine for acrylics but not for oils. I have experienced a bleed through with this canvas recently while using thin washes with acrylics. I have used this canvas with oil paints and have experienced significant sinking with colors. I have mounted it on panels with PVA glue and experienced less sinking. The canvas maybe "sized" but I have concerns about canvas rot in the future. The price is right; it would probably serve an artist who works in acrylics well. I still use this for contemporary abstract pieces done in acrylics but for traditional oil work I need to stick with an oil primed linen substrate. I have purchased a few rolls over a 2 year period and a few have had cuts/slashes through the gesso. This isn't a perfect product but you get what you pay for.

Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

DON'T BUY THIS if you're an oil painter

I just spent most of a day stretching canvases - the canvas I used was this product. I finished about half a dozen of them and then stained them with thinned paint to tone the ground prior to painting on them, since I don't like to work on a pure white surface. I noticed when staining the canvases that they had what looked like little nubs in the ground; I didn't think twice about it, since I figured it was just an irregularity in the weave.

Imagine my surprise when I turned one over and saw little stars of paint bleeding through to the other side! Every single one of the canvases that I just spent the whole day stretching is now completely worthless. If the oil paint can bleed through, the canvas will rot. This is a sub-par product, and one which should NOT be sold for oil painting. Don't be the next victim of shoddy workmanship and poor quality control - if you're an oil painter, and want your paintings to last more than a few years, avoid this product at all cost! I will be avoiding purchasing anything more from W&N after this experience, that's for sure.

Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

The only reason I didn't rate it higher, is I am sure there is a better quality primed canvas. However this is perfect for what I do. I build most of my canvases now, some of the best pre made canvases I have used were the gallery wrapped Windsor Newton brand.
This is the cloth they use building those, and it is beautiful. I just built a 96"x60" and it turned out awesome. You may want to lay down a coat of gesso then sand it if you are doing high detail work.

Bought this canvas, and stretchers, to fit some nice picture frames I found cheap. The canvas is durable and quite easy to work with around the corners. I highly recommend it for the price and value!
