40 years ago I was introduced to the Winsor & Newton Series 7 brush for inking comic book art. It was a revelation. Though there've been contenders for the top slot, the Series 7 still reigns supreme. Knowing the brush is always available, mailed quickly and more affordable than walking to the local Art Store only adds to its status.

For a beginning amateur this was a luxury, but one I have dreamed of since I was a kid many decades ago. I got the five brush set which I was too scared to use. Whilst trying to paint some Bird of Paradise flowers I finally reached for them and it was Delight all the way. Perfect shape, just the right spring, plenty of holding capacity, even the handles are made with pride. They should last forever with a little care: wash them after use and carefully re form the point. Now I want the bigger ones.

This brush keeps it's spring and feels like a brand new brush each time I use it. If I accidentally pick up and paint with one of the inferior brushes I have hanging around for mixing colors, I feel the difference right away. I always start and finish my watercolors with this brush.

Sorry to say I haven't found series 7 to be the great brush I heard of or read about. after first use my number 7 and number 5 brushes lost their points (stopped holding original point.) split ends and stray hair but at least they are a bit more springy than synthetics. or maybe it might just be a bad batch, or lack of enough experience on my part as far as the control goes. The number 3 is doing just fine though.

I typically paint finely-detailed watercolors such as botanicals or small portraits. These brushes hold a tremendous amount of paint, have just the right amount of spring and keep a needle-sharp point. They are very easy to control and feel good in the hand. I've never had one shed, and they outlast my other brushes twice over. My absolute favorite.
