My new favorite ground
By Paint Spry
from Butler, PA
Comments about Winsor & Newton Oil Painting Primer:
I've just switched to this brand after years of using Gamblin's ground. Gamblin is still one of my favorite paints, but their ground makes little bumps even when thinned with gamsol. This brand's primer is much easier to apply smoothly to both canvas and aluminum panels. It is also much quicker. I love the way it takes the paint without absorbing it like a gesso would. Great product
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Great surface for oil painting
from Durango CO
I am new to oil painting primer, so I cannot compare it to other brands, but I have been very pleased with it. I thought by purchasing pre-primed canvass that I was ready to paint. I was pleasantly surprised once I put a layer of primer on my canvas. It came out smoother and whitener - a great base on which to paint. The primer dried overnight and was ready to paint on the next day. Applying oil paint was much easier and blending seemed to be enhanced. On another canvas, I put a thin layer of the primer over my sketch. I was surprised that I was able to see the drawing through the primer. I will continue to use this primer even when my surface is already prepared.

To cover large canvases, I thin this primer with a little mineral spirits and apply three coats after a couple coats of rabbit skin glue. Easily the most brushable oil primer I've found.

Buttery and extremely long lasting!
By Quinacridone for the win!
from Bloomington, IN
This was my first foray into oil primer, and I couldn't be happier with the results. I covered a 6x4 foot canvas and used less than an inch of paint from the small can.
