Winsor & Newton's synthetic mongoose fiber offers better durability than natural mongoose. This unique synthetic fiber is so much like mongoose, it even has the tapered point and surface texture of the natural hair. It is stiffer than sable, but softer than hog bristle, perfect for acrylic and oil painting.
Each brush is elegantly crafted with a gold ferrule, and a dark brown-stained lacquered handle. The bristles are handsomely variegated in shades of ivory, gold, and brown.
Apply varnishes, primers, and gessos. The Monarch Glazing Brush is made with the same synthetic mongoose fiber as other brushes in the Monarch series, a compromise between the stiffness of bristle and the softness of sable.
It has a shorter, flatter shape than the regular filbert, with rounded edges. Use it for fine lines and soft-edge broad strokes with greater control.

Comments about Winsor & Newton Monarch Mongoose Filbert Series 5504 and 5505:
In realistic portrait painting ,It is most important to use the best available in brushes. The success of the likeness depends on it. I have always have had best results using this brand and type for delicate "glazing" with beautiful results.
Love these brushes!

Comments about Winsor & Newton Monarch Mongoose Bright Series 5501:
I use these brushes for lifting of watercolor. The don't muddy the paint and lift quickly without hurting the paper.
Excellent Quality and Value
I use these with oils and they have superior handling qualities: stiff enough to move paint around efficiently and pliable enough to nuance brush strokes.

These are my favorite brushes, I know they are supposed to be for oils, but I also love them for acrylics.

Comments about Winsor & Newton Monarch Flat:
I like them, I don't like heavy brush strokes on my paintings so they work well for me. I think they are a good synthetic brush.
Worth the Price

I am replacing my student-grade synthetic Mongoose Filberts with W&N Monarchs, and so far, I am pleased with the load of paint these brushes can handle, the control, as well as the "spring" of the bristles. I am now considering replacing my flats as well. I can't speak to these brushes' longevity since they are recent purchases, but so far they are worth the price which, by the way, is not cheap.
