Winsor & Newton's synthetic mongoose fiber offers better durability than natural mongoose. This unique synthetic fiber is so much like mongoose, it even has the tapered point and surface texture of the natural hair. It is stiffer than sable, but softer than hog bristle, perfect for acrylic and oil painting.
Each brush is elegantly crafted with a gold ferrule, and a dark brown-stained lacquered handle. The bristles are handsomely variegated in shades of ivory, gold, and brown.
Apply varnishes, primers, and gessos. The Monarch Glazing Brush is made with the same synthetic mongoose fiber as other brushes in the Monarch series, a compromise between the stiffness of bristle and the softness of sable.
It has a shorter, flatter shape than the regular filbert, with rounded edges. Use it for fine lines and soft-edge broad strokes with greater control.
Brush sizes — The length and width of a brush of a given shape and size may vary by manufacturer as brush sizes are not standardized. Since fine art brushes are handmade, expect some variation even among brushes from within a single brush line.
Shipping Note — Due to manufacturer distribution restrictions, Winsor & Newton products cannot be shipped to addresses outside of North America.

The #0 I ordered is to soft of bristles, not good

Comments about Winsor & Newton Monarch Round:
I scrub and paint with smaller brushes a lot and they have lasted. They're firm with some flexibility. The # 0 I just bought is not as good. It' s bristles are softer and thinner so there isn' t as much paint to hold or move.Something change? I don't care for this new one.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Hairs fray very easily
I've been using these brushes on 3-4 small paintings and the hairs already start to fray. I clean my brushes with gamsol and masters soap after each painting session.
A Most Excellent Brush

Comments about Winsor & Newton Monarch Mongoose Bright Series 5501:
If you work with traditional oils or, like me, water mixable oils then it's likely you're looking for the ultimate brush that can take a load or thin strip of paint and move along the canvas as precisely as you need it to. The Monarch brushes do this and they are holding shape better than any of my other brushes. Actually, they are holding perfect shape. The spring is exactly the same as when I first started using them. I'm suggesting them to my students because learning to manipulate your paints is tricky enough, best to do it with strong materials, and Monarchs are proving to be top of the line.

Comments about Winsor & Newton Monarch Mongoose Filbert Series 5504 and 5505:
Good working brush

Bought two different sizes of brushes as recommended by art teacher. So far, so good!
Top notch brush!
from Grand Junction, CO
I paint in oils with a fairly free style. The Monarch is nice blend of flexibility and just enough firmness to lay the paint where I want it and not dig up under layers. Only issue is that one of these brushes develops little "wild hairs" on the outside corners, despite my careful cleaning and shaping. Not to worry - I just clip it off and the brush is as good as new. Stands up well to my heavy use.

I use these brushes in sizes 4 - 14 for alla prima oil painting. I love how long they last, how easily they clean up, and how softly they apply the paint, both in the transparent and opaque layers.

Winsor & Newton Monarch Filbert make oil painting easy, fun!
By Kate the great
I love to use the WN filbert and enjoy it, but the reason I didn't give it an excellent ration is the bristles war down quite easily and I have to replace it every few years.
