Welcome to dickblick
Griffin is a genuine oil color, made with pigments and oil modified alkyd resin, and it can be thinned with traditional oil color solvents. Alkyds' main advantage over oil paints is that they are dry to the touch in 18 to 24 hours and can usually be varnished in 30 days. All colors remain workable for 4-8 hours, and dry at the same rate to a uniform semi-gloss finish.
As with traditional oils, the drying time is affected by the thickness of the paint and the temperature of the environment. Griffin is classed as artists' quality because the grinding of pigments and quality of raw materials equals that of Winsor's Artists' Oil Color. There is no compromise on lightfastness, color strength, and selection.
The speed of drying allows techniques such as impasto and glazing to be done in considerably less time. It also means that oil painting outdoors, on vacations, or during exams is now a realistic proposition.
Griffin Alkyds are made with an alkyd resin binder that has been modified with a non-yellowing drying oil for optimum color retention, excellent durability, and rapid drying time. Alkyds work because the binder includes a solvent that controls drying time and consistency, giving you a paint that dries quicker than oil but slower than acrylic. Use with Liquin and other traditional oil painting mediums. Clean with mineral spirits.

Griffin Alkyd colors can be mixed with traditional oils, but many painters like to use them for underpainting. It's a good application of the principle of fat over lean.
Because alkyd film is slightly less flexible and is faster drying than traditional oil color, application over oil or oilbar layers is not recommended. Alkyd is not intermixible with acrylics.

Comments about Winsor & Newton Griffin Alkyds:
Since the cadmium colors have been discontinued the substitute " Hue " colors are terrible. Not close in color to cadmium.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I've used thede paints for years.
from Flowery Branch, GA
I was taught by a professional artist who uses Winsor & Newton Alkyds and she introduced me to them. Other oils cost more but I find these to be best. They dry quickly and to me that is an advantage. And colors are great. I'd recommend them to anyone.

Alkyd Oil Purchase
from Bountiful, UT
I only work occasionally in oil and prefer the faster drying capability of Alkyd oil, so I buy it rarely, but appreciate that it is still available and Blick is always there to provide.

and mixing qualities. However the artist's wood panels that I get from you have a problem. The surface is excellent to paint on and they have been perfect for all the years that I have been buying them and the price is terrific. But in the last two shipments the 8"x10" boards are not exactly the same size and since I paint in series ( ie 5 to 8 boards are framed in a row or grid grouping) it is a problem. The dimensions vary from 1/16th of an inch to 1/8th of an inch and it is not consistent....Thus when I order frames the panels do not fit well in the frame either and the panels do not line up.Why are they being made off of precise measurement?

Griffin Alkyds are my favorite media
from Cumming, GA
I love painting with Griffin Alkyds. They flow smoothly and dry quickly. When used for painting plein air they have a similar drying time to acrylics used indoors. They have a nice range of available colors but are some are not in stock in the store locations. I would give it five stars if it were more easily available.
this product really works!
from Orlando, Fl
this product reduces the drying time to 24 hours. Mixing even a little of it in a color seems to trigger the same rapid drying time.
They saved me
By picc and paint
I needed to have a painting done from start to finish and ready to ship QUICK. I used these alkyd oils by Winsor Newton to help. I did use some traditional oils on the spots that needed controlled blending and painted those areas first. I used the alkyds on the block in and mixed half and half with regular oils on the top layers. They do not blend as well and cleaning your brushes is harder. Also when I got them on my clothes they did not wash out as easy as regular oils. But they saved me. I got my large painting done and shipped in record time.
