Welcome to dickblick
Made from Russian Black Sable hair, these unique brushes offer the perfect balance between stiff and soft hair.
With slightly more body and snap than Red Sable, but softer than Hog Bristle, Eclipse brushes are ideal for subtle blending and fine glazing, as they show minimal brush strokes. They're also highly resilient and responsive, making them perfect for lightly thinned and "let down" oil color.
A double-bodied handle with a sculpted, balanced grip both at the tail and below the ferrule make them useful for both easel painting and "close in" work.
Double Thick Brushes
Choose Double Thick shapes for extra durability, color-carrying capacity, and finely controlled working properties.
Apply varnishes, primers, and glazes.

Not Great for Glazing
By Rembrandt's Daughter
from Kenosha, WI
Comments about Winsor & Newton Winsor & Newton Eclipse Filbert:
I was excited to try this product for oil glazing, but was sorrily disappointed. I have been using the glazing technique in my work for the past 20+ years and expect a glazing brush to not leave any marks on the surface. I tried direct application; tried thinning the glaze; tried a softer and softer touch to the surface, and it still left trail marks on my painting. I have been using a wide synthetic Japanese made brush that works incredibly well and leaves no marks; I'm sticking to that one for sure!
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This is the first time I have used s natural hfiber brush and the difference is fantastic. They make handling the paint very smooth and precise. As for price they are very reasonable.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Nicely constructed brush with a long handle, this brush is ideal for loose painting. Oils go on smoothly.

Despite the following, I bought more Eclipse brushes after few paintings with my first.I had to have my first filbert #4 replaced since the hairs were terribly uneven and loose in the ferrule. Also, note that a #4 is like ordering a #2.I now have a flat, 3 filberts, a round and a fan. The soft yet responsive natural hair is unsurpassed for glazing work, amongst others. Not to forget the comfort of the well designed handle.
Fantastic for glazing

Winsor & Newton's Eclipse brushes deliver just the right balance of firmness that's perfect for layering glazes. The natural hair is also great for subtle blending. I have included a photo of a work in progress painting that was made using Winsor & Newton paints and brushes.

not as good as they used to be
By Adam Wexelblatt
from Sparks, NV
I generally like the black sables, they're soft enough to do very subtle blending but stiff enough to pick up and move large amounts of paint. These seem softer than they were prior, which isn't ideal for me. The bigger problem is that the ends of brushes are uneven and splay randomly, and as such, are very difficult to control in tight quarters. I've been able to get the ends more uniform with wire cutters, but it definitely takes a steady hand and pretty difficult to replicated the curve of a filbert.
Ok but shed
from Rural Western Colorado
I purchased several of the W&N Esclipe brushes on the recommendation of the Blick professional I talked with on the phone. I purchases Flat/Bright sizes 2, 6, 8 and 10. They are nice and in between a sable and a bristle brush in brisle strength. They are easy to clean. The handle is comfortable when painting for more than a few hourse. The overall "head" of the brush doesn't frizz out much with only a few wild hairs that seem to settle down after being used a few times. However, they shed a lot making them a bit frustrating. I keep picking out the shedded hairs. I wonder if this will diminish as I use them and they get rid of the loose hairs. If not, I will have to return them. That would be too bad as I like them otherwise.
Merchant response: Many natural hair brushes will initially drop bristles. This should, however, diminish with use and washing. If you continue to notice excessive loss, please contact us as we would be happy to assist you. You can reach us at 1-800-723-2787.

Nice brush runs small
By Lucy the artist
from Carlotta CA
Comments about Winsor & Newton Eclipse Filbert:
The winsor & newton eclipse filbert brush is really good to use with oil and acrylics. The brush is soft yet firm, but be warned the sizes run small I ordered a size 2 and size 4, it was like ordering a size 1 and size 2. The shape is well rounded, but thin enough to do detail work. I do not do any scrubbing with this brush, but it can take a lot, I don't know how long they last since its the first time I have used these particular brushes.

This brush is by far my favorite. It's all I use when oil painting. The quality and usability of this product is superior. I was excited to get a bigger size.
