I bought a set of about 6 cotman brushes 4 years ago, and have been pleased. You can use them as you would any natural sable brush. I use them for later layers in my oil paintings with thinned oil. They're about as soft as sable and spring back nicely and are very durable. You will notice they don't hold pigment quite as well. You'll have to go back to your palette to grab more paint more often than natural fiber. As with any synthetic fiber, the paint sort of sits on the outside and slides off, rather than "soaking into" the fibers the way it does with natural hair. No animals were harmed in the making of Cotmans to my knowledge.

I got a couple of Cotman brushes as a gift. I really loved them. So I ordered the entire Cotman range. I got them all except for 2 which was not included by mistake. But the brushes are excellent and work like magic. And the price is simply awesome.

The application of watercolour is soft as it should be and precise when it needs to be. The pigment load and water capacity is not as high-performing as that of Winsor and Newton's sable range however, it does a brilliant job nonetheless especially for a much cheaper price to the extent that it doesn't matter too much--unless you are willing to splash out more cash for a bit of extravagance for the sable range as I have done. The synthetic fibres retain their shapes. Lastly the aesthetics of the brush handles are more attractive than those of the proffessional range which is the icing on the cake. I consider these mid-way between a very good student grade product to proffessional. In conclusion these brushes are really decent and I hope the manufacturer maintains the quality of this range.

I own a few Winsor & Newton brushes, but the one I use, almost exclusively, is the series 222 Round #2. I use it to ink comic book pages and it has held up very well. I use india ink with it and the flow is wonderful, but extremely easy to controland will actualy hold a good amount of fluid. I've found that it cleans easily with a little soap and water. The biggest advantage for me is that I constantly switch back and forth between tools very frequently and all I have to do is give the brush a quick swirl in a cup of water to remove excess ink and a quick tap on a napkin pulls out the moisture, which is great because I will probably switch back to it again in a matter of mintues. Overall - great brush.

I had a few sable brushes, and when I purchased a pan set from W&N, it came with a Cotman brush. Quickly it became my favorite brush. I took the plunge and both the Cotman set, as well as a few other Cotman brushes to supplement. They are ALL my favorite brushes now! Besides feeling softer to me than my sables, they have great spring, hold lots of water, and have crisp points. I can't say how long they'll hold up over time, but for these prices, who cares? :) Great brushes!!!

I use these brushes with liquid acrylics as well as golden fluid acrylics and they work marvelously. They hold a lot of paint and give a nice even stroke. I have not had any issues with these brushes keeping their shape or their hairs.
