Brush Cleaner & Restorer
By Donna Marie
Comments about Winsor & Newton Brush Cleaner and Restorer:
I buy good quality brushes that get used a lot. I use a lot more acrylic paint for my artwork then any other medium. Acrylic paint is very hard on brushes. This product has revived brushes and made them usable again when I was about to trash them. This product won't revive all brushes but it will rejuvenate most of them.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Took the enamel off of brush handles
I used this cleaner to clean acrylic and oil paint out of various brushes. It definitely will get caked on acrylic out of brushes. I had one Liquitex freestyle brush that had been used for gesso. It was stiff with paint and this cleaner made it usable (not soft but usable again). However it took the enamel off of the handle of three of my good Escoda brushes. Dick Blick has been great about making the situation right but I would warn against soaking Escoda brushes for longer than ten or fifteen minutes.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with this brush cleaner. Because it is formulated to removed dried paint from the tuft of the brush, it can also remove the lacquer from the brush handle. For this reason, it is not recommended for use on painted or varnished surfaces, and contact with brush handles should be avoided. Didn't use the product for brushes, like its intended use. I used it to get paint off a certain item of mine and it worked. Just had to soak it for a bit and the paint slowly but surely came off. Pros:It does take off the paintIn a nice, clear bottle so you can see how much you have leftCons:It takes a bit to get coated on paint onThe smell isn't overpowering but can get to you a bit if you have to use a lotIf there are traces of it anywhere on the bottle and you put it down on a polished wooden serviceor something like that, it'll damage the wooden service (this happened to me even though I swear I cleaned and wiped the bottle down thoroughly)

This is a great NON-TOXIC brush cleaner. It can be reused and reused so it lasts a long time. Cleans oils beautifully and even acrylics that have hardened on the brush.

Not impressed, I had to use other products to get my brushes clean, and I always clean my brushes immediately; I never leave paint in them. I wouldn't buy this product again.
Merchant response: We're sorry to hear that this brush cleaner wasn't what you were expecting. This product is at its best when used on dried oil or acrylic, whether it's because a brush is forgotten until after the paint has dried or because there's paint up toward the ferrule that regular cleaning doesn't reach. An additional cleaning with soap and water will remove remaining traces of this cleaner and leave the brush pristine.
