Comments about Winsor & Newton Brush Cleaner and Restorer:
I have used this product for over 7 years and it has never failed me. I works to get the old dried pain off my brushes both water based and oil. And it is not harmful to me or the environment. I don't know how it works but it does. I use it to clean my brushes that I use for painting my house. I often use artist brushes for detail work and this product gets my brushes clean ( I buy art brushes for this purpose cause they allow me the fine control I need). When I spend 13 or 14 dollars per brush and I have over 15 brushes this product is a real saver.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've been doing something wrong when I clean my synthetic brushes, after using them for oil paint. As a result they were getting hard and sticky and gross. I also had a few that I had forgotten about and let them dry with refined linseed oil in the bristles. It's an expensive mistake! I almost used paint thinner, but thankfully realized in time, that it would have melted my brushes. Other artists were swearing by this brush restorer, so I gave it a shot and it works. This is really going to save me money by making my brushes last longer! #sweepstakes

I bought this on the recommendation of a friend, but haven't had much luck with it. It slightly restored a couple of brushes I used with acrylic, but they are not back to normal still. Going to try another treatment to see if I have more luck. I'm also unclear as to whether this can get washed down the sink.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: Thank you for your review. Best practices for disposing of paint waste, including brush cleaners, do not involve pouring down the drain. Check with waste management in your community for guidelines, and remember that if the pigments in your paint are hazardous, then all paint waste must be considered hazardous as well. Brush Cleaner & Restorer
By Donna Marie
I buy good quality brushes that get used a lot. I use a lot more acrylic paint for my artwork then any other medium. Acrylic paint is very hard on brushes. This product has revived brushes and made them usable again when I was about to trash them. This product won't revive all brushes but it will rejuvenate most of them.

Took the enamel off of brush handles
I used this cleaner to clean acrylic and oil paint out of various brushes. It definitely will get caked on acrylic out of brushes. I had one Liquitex freestyle brush that had been used for gesso. It was stiff with paint and this cleaner made it usable (not soft but usable again). However it took the enamel off of the handle of three of my good Escoda brushes. Dick Blick has been great about making the situation right but I would warn against soaking Escoda brushes for longer than ten or fifteen minutes.
Merchant response: Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with this brush cleaner. Because it is formulated to removed dried paint from the tuft of the brush, it can also remove the lacquer from the brush handle. For this reason, it is not recommended for use on painted or varnished surfaces, and contact with brush handles should be avoided.
