My first time experimenting with watercolor paints, as an enthusiastic and excellent teacher coaches me along on Thursday mornings, this middle-aged student is just having a blast. Because I have painted with oils, used pastels, experimented with drawing from charcoal to pencils,as well as having delved heavily into ceramics and print-making, I thought I would invest in my instructor's many recommended watercolor tubes of paint from Winsor Newton available for artists through Dick Blick. Just two weeks along, I am excited to feel how these colors work for me as I learn this medium. Just came in from a walk with a little collection of vibrantly changed autumn leaves in my hand. Tomorrow morning, I'll be practicing ways to see them in watercolors using my new array of Winsor Newton paints. I find these watercolors economical to use for an artistic quality paint. The pigment of these paints are average however they are fine to use.

consistent results. lightfast. brilliant colors.
availability in tubes(5, 14, 37 ml), half pans, whole pans, large pans. The whole pans are available from retailors in England.

I purchased the Winsor & Newton Artists' Compact Set.

PROS:
* Best watercolor paints I've worked with
* Intense, vividly saturated colors
* Full range of values can be produced easily
* Finely-milled pigments allow perfectly smooth washes even with watered-down paints

CONS:
* Awful case is worse than any case I've seen at any price. It doesn't even hold the paints or pans, they merely sit on top of it. If you bump the case or overturn it even when closed, the pans will fall out, paints will stick to each other or adhere themselves to the lid, which makes it a poor travel case.
* Poorly designed case is 3x larger than it has any reason to be, which is also annoying for travel.
* Many colors are almost identical. Two yellows and three of the reds are almost the same.
* Some useful colors aren't included. There's no magenta or purple include, which limits the range of colors you can mix. I wish these were included instead of the unnecessary colors.
