Great No Mess Way to Varnish Paintings
By Star City Painter

Comments about Winsor & Newton Artist Picture Varnishes:
Used this Winsor & Newton Gloss Spray Varnish to protect an oil painting done on canvas board. Simple and easy to use product from a name well known in art materials. Spray goes on evenly and drys in hours. Additional coats are easy to apply over the initial coat. Left a glossy, clear coat that really brought out the details in the painting - especially the darker hues. Highly recommended for those who want to protect their art without the hassle of mixing, brushing, and cleaning up afterwards. Do recommend spraying outdoors in a well ventilated area and keeping the canvas flat until the varnish dries.

I use to final varnish oil paintings
from Washington DC
I have never used spray varnish before. I ususally brush on my picture varnish. This product seems to work very well and produce a nice even varnish film that dried reliably to a satin finish as advertised.I don't know anything about competitive alternatives so cannot comment on whether or not this was a good deal. This survey requires me to answer that question so I have answered as neutrally as possible. It does NOT have directions on the can: just a lot of warnings. The WN website did not have directions either.
The best I've used

This spray varnish is my favorite, the only one I use now. Perfect for refreshing an oil painting in process, it freshens up those next-day dull spots to their former color and sheen. This spray is not too glossy when applied properly, and also makes a fairly new painting (too young for final varnish) exhibition ready. I count on this stuff!

IF YOU ARE INTO TACKY...
from North Bend, Oregon
This says it is usable as a varnish coat on acrylic. Applied it to a well dried acrylic over gesso surface and 2 weeks later it is still tacky. So if you WANT a forever tacky finish this is the product for you!
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

works great for me

I am an artist working mostly in acrylic on canvas. I have been using Winsor & Newton spray varnishes for years. They are consitent in application and in the finished product. I have tried other brands and find this to be the best for the buck.
