clear gesso confusion
By Mrs. Art Teacher
from Farmington, MO
I thought the clear gesso was quite high compared to normal white gesso, however the project we are making required it. It went on well and dried quickly. The product has a rough sandy or gritty texture when dry. I'm not sure why. Regular gesso does not have this texture. We are sealing between a collage layer and a top painting layer with the gesso. I think with the price being a factor I would seal future products with a glue or modge-podge type product.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
I love this clear gesso!!!
from Leesburg va
I love this gesso. It changed my whole process and streamlined my work load in ways I could not have imagined! Would highly recommend! I use it to block out watercolor paper so I can oil paint. My painting process has become easier and more profitable just form this small change.
Jury is still out.
I like the fact that it creates a non white background. I tried a grey and found it a bit too dark. I find that the ground created has a bit more tooth than I like. I may try it again with sanding in-between coats.

I'm trying to improve my paintings and for me it is better to draw, then paint over it. If I use regular or tinted gesso, I can't see the pencil drawing so well, so I thought I'd try a transparent gesso. It actually worked better than I thought... the pencil marks did not smear, and the acrylic covered it. It makes it so much EASIER to get a good rendering. Draw, fix with clear gesso, then paint. A little expensive, but worth the money.

Super Multipurpose Clear Gesso
from Vermont, US
I use W&N Clear Gesso when I want a LOT of tooth for my oil pastel painting surfaces and R&F Pigment Sticks. If I want less tooth, I use Liquitex Clear Gesso. I love those. One just has to experiment to find the appropriate degree of desire tooth since these Clear Gessos can be thinned with acrylic polymer and\or water up to 25%. I sometimes color it with acrylic paint or ink or draw my sketch on the surface before gessoing. If I end up with to much tooth, I sand it down!

Clear Gesso allows substrate to shine
from Albuquerque, NM
I love using the clear gesso over a birch panel substrate. This allows me to use oil glazes to highlight the wood grain of the panel, which can be incorporated into my piece.
Pleased with this
from Oregon, USA
This is the only brand of gesso I've used so far, so I can't compare it to others, unfortunately. However, it seems to have very good covering ability (opacity) and has worked well on cardboard or canvas paper so far. Seems a little on the thinner side, but again I don't have others to compare it to. I'll modify my review when I try other products, if needed.I'd recommend this to others as I have no real complaints.

The clear gesso feature allows for the support to become a major factor in the design and concept of a work. Allowing the chosen support color like linen or print fabric to benefit the work and design. The transparency is very good up to two coats, the tooth given is very good. It could use more open time to allow for a longer time to apply and level the coats. It is thicker than a matte medium which gives it the ability to hold brush marks. Care has to be given so there are no ridges that will remain milky. It seems to be slightly clearer than the same number of coats of matte. Wish it came in gallons so the pricing could be less.
