Way better than store-bought acrylic gesso for oils
I gessoed 10 panels. Most used a store-bought generic gesso, but a couple used the last of my expensive Golden brand gesso. I picked this as an alternative because it does not use lead, is less expensive than the leaded alternative, but does not require that i use a double boiler. I paint on panels, so I don't have to go through a lot of extra effort with the titanium-based primer. I first used PVA sizing on the masonite, then used two coats of Williamsburg primer on the masonite or pressed hardboard. It went on much smoother than the acrylic gesso and had no brush strokes compared to the acrylic gessoes. It also has a nice gloss. The generic gessoes required 6 or more applications, and I used up both containers but still could see the dark brown through them. The Golden required only two-four coats, but without sanding, it showed my brush strokes...and I use the sponge brushes for this. The oil primer also worked well with the sponge brushes, and I was able to use it inside without toxic fumes. Awesome. It required fewer applications. More awesomeness. It's my new go-to.
Best Painting Ground Hands-Down
By Rob V

This is one of the best painting products I've ever used in any category. When mixed at a 2.5:1 ratio, Ground to Odorless Mineral Spirits, as recommended, the product has a consistency similar to a velvety heavy-cream or runny-yogurt. It spreads incredibly smooth and gets great coverage. After brushing the mix onto canvas, I scraped the excess grounds off with a trowel, then used a smooth roller to even out the surface to an impeccable finish. One thin layer of this products looks like 10 layers of a regular gesso—a beautiful opaque white.I would highly recommend this product for oil painting if you can withstand the 7-10 drying time between layers.

I just used the titanium white oil ground on a newly sized linen canvas and believe me, it is quality oil primer. It is nice and thick and covers extremely well. So much better than gesso ground and much safer than lead carbonate oil primer which I used to use.
