Over a decade ago, in the hills of Northumberland, England, artist John Hersey began hand-making his own pastels. Gently hand-rolled and air-dried, each stick is as much an organic sculpture as it is a tool. Look closely at a stick and you may see the fine lines and fingerprints imparted by the pastels' creator. Each pastel takes on the tapered shape of the bowl of the maker's palms.
Hersey's unique color formulations contain only pure pigments in a cycle of related hues, instead of adding white or black to the colors. The result is intense, vibrant color application not muddied by the blending of colors. The color range is sublime overall and at moments astonishing.
Unison's pastels contain very little binder, making them truly soft and smooth. Pastels measure approximately 2-1/8" long × 5/8" diameter (54 mm × 16 mm). Sticks vary slightly due to the hand-making process.
Gift Idea — A variety of special combination Unison sets are available. See Unison Handmade Pastel Sets for pictures and more detailed specifications of these sets.
No Minimum Order — Many of our pastel lines require a minimum order of 6 pastels, however Unison pastels can be ordered individually.
Note — Use this color chart as an approximation of the real color. If exact color matching is necessary, use actual samples of the materials.
I read so many great reviews about unison soft pastels but was a little disappointed with them. very inconsistent with size, I know they are handmade but some are nearly half the size of others. Nice to work with on most surfaces and good colour range. Not as soft as Great American,Ludwig, schminke etc. They do layer well.

Comments about Unison Handmade Pastel Sets:
Soft hand, beautiful colors, I use these to make art on the wall. I use my hands a lot to rub the colors in. they are fantastic. I love them. Expensive yes. I am not an expert in pastel use, and use them rather unconventionally- but these have really pushed a button with me.

Comments about Unison Handmade Pastels:
I just read the most recent review and it irritated me so much I had to write one myself. I'm a professional artist and my entire career is dependent on pastels, so I know what I'm talking about. The person below wrote that Unison does not have the brightest pastels and he/she uses shmincke. This is absolutely wrong. This person is probably using the "less bright colors." For someone who uses pastels obsessively, I would say this is a soft to firm pastel and excellent quality. For someone who isn't used to using pastels, this is an extremely soft brand. You've never felt anything like it. The best part is the intensity of the color and the smoothness and consistency of application. Schmincke is a softer brand. This is not a question. But it's best to use both pastels together when layering. Schmincke's colors are fantastic but slightly less quality than Unison. When looking at the color of a schmincke stick the applied color will be just slightly duller. A Unison application will be true to the stick. It is often difficult to layer Unison on top of schmincke, but you can usually layer schmincke on Unison. Schmincke can also be layered on oil pastels (many colors- not prussian blue), but unison rarely can. Both companies are the best for this product

unison pastels - my base kit

Comments about Unison Handmade Pastel Sets:
i recently "upgraded" myself to a set of unison landscape pastels. the colors are very natural. After i apply my base of hard pastels i use the "unisons" for the main painting. the color is very intense and richly pigmented and is able to stand up to a vigorous workout without crumbling. my only wish is for some brighter, "less natural" colors, but for those times i use my "schmincke's"

Comments about Unison Handmade Pastel Sets:
My sister got these for me after over hearing how i "rave" about this brand of pastel. They are much smoother and softer then any other pastel on the market..yes! "Even" sennellier! these quality pastels go on like a stick of butter on a frying pan, lol ..These are absolutely hands down the best pastels I've ever used! Ive been an artist for 30 years and i must say Unison is pretty solid in quality therefore I see the value in buying these for any serious artist searching for truly rich colors!

Unison Pastels were created by an artist for artists. These uniquely soft and highly pigmented sticks are individually rolled which eliminates hard spots and provides consistent texture and color.
