Welcome to dickblick
Over a decade ago, in the hills of Northumberland, England, artist John Hersey began hand-making his own pastels. Gently hand-rolled and air-dried, each stick is as much an organic sculpture as it is a tool. Look closely at a stick and you may see the fine lines and fingerprints imparted by the pastels' creator. Each pastel takes on the tapered shape of the bowl of the maker's palms.
Hersey's unique color formulations contain only pure pigments in a cycle of related hues, instead of adding white or black to the colors. The result is intense, vibrant color application not muddied by the blending of colors. The color range is sublime overall and at moments astonishing.
Unison's pastels contain very little binder, making them truly soft and smooth. Pastels measure approximately 2-1/8" long × 5/8" diameter (54 mm × 16 mm). Sticks vary slightly due to the hand-making process.
Gift Idea — A variety of special combination Unison sets are available. See Unison Handmade Pastel Sets for pictures and more detailed specifications of these sets.
No Minimum Order — Many of our pastel lines require a minimum order of 6 pastels, however Unison pastels can be ordered individually.
Color Chart Note — Use this color chart as an approximation of the real color. If exact color matching is necessary, use actual samples of the materials.

Comments about Unison Handmade Pastels:
Unison pastels are very soft. They hold up well without crumbling or breaking a lot like some other brands. These are the best soft pastels for the cost. I highly recommend them.

Essential to the Portrait Sets
from San Antonio, TX
Comments about Unison Handmade Pastel Sets:
I added the Eye Colors set to my 18-color Portrait Set and my 8-color Caucasial Portrait Set. Between the three sets, I am have all the colors I need in order to produce portraits for skin tones all the way from near-deathly-pale (self-portraits, I'm afraid!) to light Mediterranean (my husband, who tans like nobody's business!). The Eye Color set in particular was essential for not only eye colors, but hair colors as well. Also useful for shadows. Very happy I bought it.

Can't Wait to Expand My Collection
I received the Portrait Set of 18 for Christmas from my parents and my initial attempts revealed the need to add to that set in order to get the effect I wanted. Due to the expense of the brand, I had to wait a considerable amount of time to do this and it was a painful thing to let that beautiful set sit unused for so long. Now all is well, however, as I happily paint portraits. Works well with the Sennelier Pastel Card, by the way!
limited experience - would buy again

As a relative newcomer to pastels, I ordered one color of Unisons, because it isn't readily available in the other brands I'm using. The stick is softer than some I'm using, but not as soft as others. It provides an intense "eggplant" color, goes on smoothly. I'm very satisfied.

These only just arrived and I have not had an opportunity to explore fully. I am an amateur self-taught artist who am rediscovering working in pastel - a medium I used for sketching and painting when I was a kid. I had a variety of mixed sets of student grades from those days (Jon Gnagy (!), Grumbacher, Faber Castell, etc); so this is my first set of artists' quality - a choice I made once I decided to put off working in oils or watercolors for now. I simply love the feel of these; some are a bit easier to apply than others probably based on pigment properties, but I have no complaint. I look forward to more work with this set to complement and replace my older supplies as they get consumed.I got the larger color array for starters, but I can see future purchases will likely be of smaller, specialized groups as things run out
Rich wonderful quality
Goes on smooth and when activated with water fantastically rich in color.

I cannot believe how soft this is. I started using pastel pencils and am now going to soft. Wow! What a difference. Love the creamy texture.

I found them exceptional quality, holding together and going down like butter eve on rough sanded paper. So many colors, so much money.
