Rubylith is a red masking film that offers extended spectral protection. Safe for use with camera-speed darkroom films as well as indirect gelatin stencil films and diazo, diazo acrylic, or SBQ sensitized stencil films or emulsions, Rubylith is primarily used in the camera and plate making operations for offset lithography, flexography, gravure, and screen processes where orthochromatic films and plates are used.
This light-safe, knife-cut film is coated onto a polyester backing sheet. It can be cut manually or on a plotter to produce masks for film contacting, plate making, and film positives for photographic stencil production.
Rubylith Masking Film is used in every segment of the graphic arts industry and has gained such prominence that the Rubylith name has become synonymous with masking film. It is produced and distributed to a broad graphic arts customer base, including the screen printing industry.
Re-engineered in 2006 to have a single "Ulano Universal Tack Level," Rubylith provides the tack level required by most plotter customers. Slight color variations are cosmetic and will not affect the light filtration (masking) properties of the film.
Handling Charge — When ordering sheets of paper or board larger than 18” x 24” in quantities of less than 10, a $3.00 per order handling fee applies. Paper or boards may be assorted to reach the quantity of 10.

Black carried hard-to-find product

I needed rubylith masking film for an ongoing graphic arts project, and it is no longer available at local retailers. Blick saved my day, and my project.

I use this for masking photographic negatives in palladium printing. The Rubylith is effective in blocking the uv light that leads to the formation of the positive image, thereby producing a clean separation of image from paper. Good product, easy to cut accurately, and can be used repeatedly in making many photographs.

I needed Rubylith for an unusual project, a photographic safelight in an outdoor room-size camera obscura. Over a number of phone calls, I heard things like, "Well we carried it 20 years ago." But when I thought to call Blick, they had it in stock and it arrived in a couple of days. Now I'm happily making picture inside the camera obscura.

Works OK for astronomy purposes
from SE Texas
I use rubylith film to provide a red filter for my cellphone and iPad. I use both items when stargazing and using the film helps in preserving night vision. The film is inexpensive and easy to cut. It was extremely well-packaged for shipping and I use the cardboard to store the leftover film for later use. Please note, however, that this film is not self-adheriing to cellphone, tablet, and computer screens and will need to be secured with tape, rubber bands, etc. If you want self-adhering red film, you need to purchase the more expensive PVC film found at astronomy stores. However, if self-adhesion is not a requirement (such as adding red filters to flashlights), the rubylith film is fine.
