In engraving on metal plates, a burr is raised at various places along the line. This burr must be removed. Rubbing a few strokes with the scraper held flat will remove this burr without damaging the plate.

Specialized Tools Have Specialized Uses!

Comments about Triangular Scraper:
I bought this product, a triangular scraper, for the sole purpose during an Intaglio class. I was told that this retailer and supply store was really nice and fair-priced. Shipping took less than 10 business days when a discount code and free shipping was chosen. This tool was chosen to scrape away the burrs made on a copper plate in the mezzotint intaglio process. A pole rocker is used to create thousands of grooves and holes in a plate, then a scraper is used scrape away the burrs to create a surface that will not hold ink when inked and polished. Do not use this tool's tip in absence of a dry-point needle or scribe to scratch into the plate. That's what a scribe is for. The side of the scraper is specifically designed for scraping, and not engraving or burnishing. Overall, this tool was a requirement for class. Class just started today, but I've had plenty experience in the past with mezzotint and using this scraper tool.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
