Welcome to dickblick
Tri-Art is committed to operating an ecologically responsible factory. For example, through a process of flocculation, separation, pressing, filtration, and re-dispersion, Tri-Art returns the water used in its manufacturing processes back to the environment in a cleaner state than when it arrived.
Also, by using 100% of the waste pigments recaptured during production, Tri-Art has created Sludge, a high-quality gesso with more pigment solids than any gesso in its price range.
Sludge is an economical alternative to both a neutral ground and neutral color. It can be used in place of gesso when a muted base is desired. Sludge is semi-opaque and, although gray in tone (colors will vary), can be used in small quantities as an opacifier or medium-toned color extender. Because of the quantity of solid particulate in the paint, Sludge has a light tooth that also makes it a suitable ground for mixed media applications.
Because Sludge is made with 100% acrylic emulsion, it is comparable in character to other acrylics. Therefore, it is highly adhesive to a variety of surfaces, dries to a water-resistant semi-gloss finish, and can be easily applied with a variety of painting tools.

It does not have to be black or white

Comments about Tri-Art Sludge Gesso:
I've been using this gesso on hardboard panels for several months now. Black or white gesso lends itself to high contrast with work in progress. This provides a nice alternative. Just ordered a larger size when I noticed my jar getting low.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I love the consistency and finish of this gesso. It's thinner than most gessos, so no need to mix with water. It spreads evenly and allows me to reduce visible brushstrokes by applying somewhat dry. The description says the tint may vary but my jar is pretty close to white.

Use in conjunction with true gesso

I decided to try this Sludge Gesso after years of having to thin down my pasty "professional" gesso to get to a viscosity that I could work with.BUT, be forewarned that, if you gesso your own raw canvas, then the surface quality will be much more matte and, in my opinion, more absorbent than a regular gesso. I can usually get away with two coats of my old gesso mix, but with Sludge, I noticed the surface (after letting two coats dry) was gray and flat.My oil paints handled much more dryly, to the point that I had to use more paint and medium than usual while pressing a bit harder, too. The effect, however, of very solid panes of color was a refreshing contrast to my usual very-visible brush strokes.Whether you use this or a standard gesso will come down to style, but be aware that there is a marked difference.

I decided to try this gesso, and I've tried many others, and it is amazing.I just got it and tried it on three canvas to cover old paintings to recycle canvas.Other gesso tends to need three or so times to make the canvas white again with no bleed through and it is hard to spread.this takes one maybe two for darker spots and it spread like butter. This gesso will be the only one I use from now on.It is totally amazing.

Tri-Art Modeling paste provides a high relief textured ground that can even be sanded or carved! Tri-Art Gessos are smooth, flexible, sand-able and absorbent. Tri-Art Sludge Gesso is the most economical and ecological gesso while providing an opaque and flexible ground. Tri-Art Top Coat Hard is designed as a non-removable final coat for rigid supports. It dries glass clear to a tough, scratch resistant, glossy finish.
