Comments about Tri-Art Sludge Gesso:

I decided to try this Sludge Gesso after years of having to thin down my pasty "professional" gesso to get to a viscosity that I could work with.

BUT, be forewarned that, if you gesso your own raw canvas, then the surface quality will be much more matte and, in my opinion, more absorbent than a regular gesso. I can usually get away with two coats of my old gesso mix, but with Sludge, I noticed the surface (after letting two coats dry) was gray and flat.

My oil paints handled much more dryly, to the point that I had to use more paint and medium than usual while pressing a bit harder, too. The effect, however, of very solid panes of color was a refreshing contrast to my usual very-visible brush strokes.

Whether you use this or a standard gesso will come down to style, but be aware that there is a marked difference.

I decided to try this gesso, and I've tried many others, and it is amazing.
I just got it and tried it on three canvas to cover old paintings to recycle canvas.
Other gesso tends to need three or so times to make the canvas white again with no bleed through and it is hard to spread.
this takes one maybe two for darker spots and it spread like butter.
This gesso will be the only one I use from now on.
It is totally amazing.
