Tri-Art mediums have been formulated for use with Tri-Art acrylic colors to provide the artist with an endless range of textures, effects, and finishes. These mediums are compatible with each other and all Tri-Art acrylic colors. They can also be used with acrylic colors from other manufacturers.
Mix them together in any proportion to achieve the desired texture, viscosity, and finish. The only exception to the rule is Tri-Art Retarder, which is most effective only when used in the correct proportion. All Tri-Art artist mediums are of archival quality.
Gloss and Semi-Gloss Gel Mediums — Tri-Art Gloss and Semi-Gloss Gel Mediums are, in essence, high viscosity paints without pigment. Formulated from 100% pure acrylic polymer emulsion, they are white when wet and dry to a glossy or semi-glossy, flexible film. Tri-Art's Gel Mediums have a creamy, buttery consistency and are capable of holding every texture detail from high peaks to a fingerprint. Even in very thick coats, Tri-Art Gel Mediums maintain optimal flexibility. They dry to a waterfast film which will not yellow with time. This makes them excellent as a color extender or impasto glazing medium. Their superior adhesive quality also makes them the ideal mediums for collage and mixed media.
Gloss and Semi-Gloss Polymers — Their low viscosities make them ideal as glazing mediums and top coats. They are extremely adhesive and can be used in collage and craft applications such as découpage. Add them to resoluble water based paints such as watercolours and gouache to increase water resistance and flexibility.
Matte Gel Medium — It maintains all of the properties of its glossy counterpart, but it produces instead a very matte and toothy finish. When mixed with Gloss Gel Medium, a full range of finishes can be achieved. Use it also as a photo transfer medium. Using a paintbrush or palate knife, apply the medium to any photocopied image, allow to dry, then wash the paper away from the dried gel film with lukewarm water. The ink will remain on the gel, which can then be bound to the painting surface.
Matte Polymer — Tri-Art's Matte Polymer boasts the same handling and performance characteristics as the Gloss and Semi-Gloss polymers, but it dries to a matte finish. Use it to decrease the gloss of acrylic colors and gloss mediums, and as a matte glazing medium. When a transparent ground is needed, it can be used in the place of gesso, and its tooth will increase adhesion.
Modeling Paste — Useful for building up surfaces, it has a very high viscosity which allows for achieving stiff peaks and crisp, rigid texture. It dries to a matte, opaque white finish. It can also be used to fill cracks and create textured surfaces. This premium quality product can be sanded and lightly carved once fully cured.
Nepheline Gels — These semi-transparent mediums are used to create flexible, granular textures. They mix easily with Tri-Art Acrylic colours and mediums to create a variety of effects.
Opacifying Medium — This medium radically opacifies transparent and semi-opaque colors while retaining their true hues. Milky and translucent when wet, Opacifying Medium dries to an optically opaque matte finish. It can be mixed with acrylic colors in any proportion.
Retarder — Slow the drying time of acrylic colors. Mixed with colours and mediums at up to 15% concentration, it increases open-time and allows for greater manipulation.
Self-Leveling Gel — Create thick, level glazes without brush strokes. When used to extend colour it will impart its self-levelling properties to other Tri-Art Acrylic products. It dries to a level film which can be “etched” into when partially dry to create encaustic-like effects.
