Tombow Pencils are tops!
from Sarasota FL
These are rich graphite pencils that can be applied smoothly. They yield quite a bit of graphite in the "B" range. If you are looking for a harder, lighter pencil, then select the H range. We use these a lot and they are recommended to all my students!
Very versatile and good quality
from Jersey City, NJ
I use this product for drawing on Blick Bristol pads. One can achieve the lighter side of medium and all the way to very dark shadows. It is versatile and blends very well with just cheep paper towels. I also like that it doesn't destroy the paper and any marks can be erased fairly well.

an expressive but dark pencil
The feel of these pencils as they lay down graphite is definitely a five-star experience, but the hardness range is definitely just three. I bought the 2H, HB, and 2B. Like others have said, the Tombow pencils are much darker. The HB pencil is as dark as 4B in other brands. There is also little difference between the base values of darkness that the HB and 2B pencils make, just that the 2B is a slightly softer lead that releases graphite more readily. The 2H pencil has the same base value as HB pencils in other brands. However, the lead is harder, so it doesn't produce as wide a range of values as other HB pencils, when you use more pressure. One thing I felt was exceptional about the Tombow pencils was their reponsiveness to variations in pressure. Even though the HB pencil's "base" value is more like a 4B in other brands, with much lighter pressure you can make much lighter values, smoothly, than regular 4B pencils. The range of value that I could get from a single Tombow HB pencil was incredible, I've never had a pencil behave that expressively. If I had to choose just one pencil to take with me for general drawing, the Tombow HB would be it. The 2B is also a very good choice, soft, but holds a point much better than comparable 4B pencils in other brands. However, I would not choose the Tombow pencils for tightly rendered graphite work that required multiple pencil grades in the same drawing. Perhaps I need a to get a Tombow H and B to test, but the difference in texture between the 2H and HB is too much for me. The 2H is smooth, but it doesn't get as dark as the equivalent HB I would normally use in another brand. I could use the Tombow HB with light pressure, to bridge the gap in value, but the HB graphite is too much more textured. It's much easier to use another brand that has more sensible and even separation between their pencil hardness grades.

I use graphite sticks mostly, but will grab a pencil for finer detail or quick sketching. Recently, I purchased several brands of HB pencils to compare. Most of them where either too hard or too soft, but I found the Tombow to be right in the middle where I needed them to be. The go on smoothly, sharpen well and make a consistent mark on the page. I'm a Tombow convert. I bought an HB, 4B and 6B, but will be getting a 2H and 4H to compliment my graphite work.
I will buy these again and again!

The Japanese are fanatical about their pencils and it shows. These are amazing pencils.

Best Pencil Ever
I often do quick sketches in preparation for my paintings, but recently fell in love with graphite and do a lot of finished works solely in graphite. My old pencils were not up to par and in trying to replace them kept finding inconsistencies with other brands. So, I thought I would try the Tombow pencils since the reviews were favorable. They do not disappoint. I purchased an HB as a trial and compared with the other brands I own. This pencil has a rich tone, not too soft/not too hard (I have some HB's that feel like H's compared to this), the leads sharpen beautifully and the graphite glides on the paper just right, either smooth or textured. I'll be buying more Tombow pencils.
Good Drawing Pencils
I upgraded from using General's Kimberly pencils and these are great. The leads are very smooth and I don't get scratchy marks like I do with General's pencils.
A matter of personal preference

These pencils are worth a try, and bought by the dozen Blick's price is unbeatable. I happen to like Tombow pencils a lot--but others have strong preferences for other brands. To each his own, but if you settle on Tombow, Blick is a good place to buy them

I picked up a set of Tombow Mono Pencils because I was tired of using graphite pencils that required constant sharpening and were hard to work with closer details. These pencils have such a nice range of values and maintain a good point throughout use, and are great for creating even tones on paper. Plus, they're very nice looking!
