My Very Favorite Colored Pencil Book...
It's true...when this book came out in 2014, I had finally found THE colored pencil book I'd been waiting so long for someone to write. It was important to me that the artist/author have first hand experience with Colored Pencils, Watercolor Pencils, and Wax Pastels and Combining Colored Drawing Media. I wanted lots of ideas for surfaces/grounds to try knowing ahead of time that they work well with this medium. She not only did that, but she certainly held nothing back in her arsenal of ideas. She shares things she has learned without holding back crucial information. I've personally read the book through several times front to back, but one of it's best uses is as a reference book. It's that good! I often refer back to it when I am ready to try a new surface. There is so much information packed into every page, you can't skip anything.I really appreciate that this colored pencil artist does not use OMS or highly toxic solvents. Sometimes certain conditions (such as being on oxygen) make using OMS a very dangerous combination...and that's what colored pencil is...a non-toxic medium. She describes very clearly why she doesn't use certain solvents...as well as what she uses to get that well sought after smooth painterly effect. But more than that, it's clear that her mind is constantly engaged to stretch the limits of what can be done with colored pencils, making this book a must read!
