The Great Epochs of European Art DVDs

This informative DVD series from Kultur was filmed on location throughout Europe and features the great masterpieces of architecture, sculpture, and painting. In addition to exploring formal and stylistic aspects of each epoch, great importance is devoted to revealing the thoughts and ideas that have formed the basis of art throughout the ages.

Early Christian and Byzantine Art, Romanesque Art & Gothic Art — This DVD includes three complete programs. Early Christian and Byzantine Art explores the early Christian basilicas of Ravenna, the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, the Cloister of St. Catherine in Sinai, and other magnificent creations of the Byzantine period, focusing especially on the development of Christ Pantocreator iconography. Romanesque Art explores the restoration of the Roman Empire and the revival of Antiquity by Charlemagne, which heralded a new age that evolved into the source of much of European culture in the Middle Ages. Gothic Art explores the birth of the Gothic cathedral in the Île-de-France. Here the Gothic system of architecture, with its pier buttresses and quadrant arches, its portal sculpture and its glass windows, is examined in its full glory. DVD. 150 minutes.

The Art of the Ancient Greeks & The Art of the Ancient Romans — This DVD includes two complete programs examining the masterworks of the antiquity. The first program explores the portrayal of humanity as a central artistic theme of the Ancient Greeks — reflected in the representations of their gods and even in the proportions of their temples. Selected masterpieces of Greek sculpture cast light upon the Archaic period, the Classical period, and Hellenism. The second program explores Roman art first and foremost as architectural art, demonstrating the power and pretensions of a world power. It shows the daring, innovative functional buildings constructed by Roman engineers and architects — their tremendous theaters, thermae, and circus buildings. It also describes the role of the Emperor, his elevation by impressive portrayals of power, and the private world of the Romans as expressed through their luxury villas. DVD. 110 minutes.

The Art of the 19th Century & The Art of the 20th Century — This DVD includes two complete programs that span an vast range of artistic development leading to the foundations of contemporary art. In The Art of the 19th Century, selected masterpieces of Classicism, Romanticism, Realism, Historicism, and Impressionism illustrate the manifold and diverse phenomena of this epoch in architecture, sculpture, and painting. In The Art of the 20th Century, the break with tradition and the search for new forms are explored through movements such as Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism, Surrealism, and Constructivism. DVD. 100 minutes.

The Art of the Renaissance, Baroque Art & Rococo Art — This DVD includes three complete programs. The Art of the Renaissance explores exemplary masterpieces of Renaissance architecture, sculpture, and painting, as well as the great artistic personalities of the era. Baroque Art examines the intersections of art, power, royalty, and the Roman Catholic Church, focusing on figures including Bernini; the emperors, kings, and princes of Europe; and in particular Louis XIV, with his palace and gardens of Versailles. Rococo Art shows how the ornamental form of the rocaille became the leitmotiv, giving the epoch its name, and how the world of salons, festivities, and make-believe came to be reflected in the pictures of leading artists such as Watteau and Boucher. DVD. 150 minutes.
