this book is really the bible for encaustic users. if you forget a ratio while attempting hardening your paint--the ratios and info are there. recipes are explained down to the type of beeswax to use in your work (never use bleached which may be a little cheaper--there's going to be pigments somewhere and bleach will continue doing what bleach does. instead spring for carefully filtered and sunlight exposed beeswax o give a white.) there are hundreds of things to know about encaustics before spending on the expensive paints and equipment. reading this book gave me definite health reasons to set up the studio correctly the first time and not having to do it again when things weren't working well. the way i work, i find it takes a lot of space and a lot of electricity.
i've noticed in some of the weekend crafter, somerset studio type magazines of people doing all kinds of ridiculous stuff with the magic medium of encaustic--i just hope they do not sell their work--the owners will be incredible disappointed when the wax flakes off the acrylic paint underneath or crack when jostled on a flexible canvas.
this book is an absolute must if you are thinking of opening or building a studio for encaustics!!
