Frustrated by the lack of color options and choices for very soft pastels, Terry Ludwig began experimenting with formulating his own pastels in 1995. His goal was to create a vast array of color in pastels that were uniformly soft across all densities of hue. The result was the development of intense colors, in unique hues that are unavailable in other pastel lines.
These hand-crafted pastels contain a broad range of pigments and minimal natural binders, rendering highly concentrated, velvety pastels. The square shape delivers thick, broad strokes and thin, precise lines.
Intense Darks, the hallmark of the line, features bright acidic greens, a broad range of intense reds, and eggplant purples that have been described as "the new black."
Individual pastels measure approximately 1½" × ½" × ½" (38 mm × 13 mm × 13 mm). Because each pastel is hand-crafted, their size and shape may vary slightly.
Note — Use this color chart as an approximation of the real color. If exact color matching is necessary, use actual samples of the materials.
The Colors are very bright and vivid but these pastels only work well with the Wallis Sanded Pastel Paper. These Pastels didn't work well with the UART Paper. I found they don't work well with normal Charcoal or Pastel Paper. Plus, some of the Pastels have little "chards" of metal in them, which makes them hard to blend with the other pastels in the line. These little "chards" of metal almost cut completely through my Wallis Paper I invested in, which will be a product you will need to constantly purchase if you choose to use these Pastels. One other thing I noticed about these Pastels is that some of them grind down very easily on the Wallis paper and some of them didn't produce any quality lines at all. Just Beware before you buy these. They are good for expressionist/abstract work, but detailed work is not possible with Ludwig Pastels. Also remember they only work well with Wallis Sanded Pastel Papers.

Vibrant Colors, Terrific Texture

Comments about Terry Ludwig Soft Pastel Sets:
The quality and color are fantastic. I like that applying a color over another color does not blend it into a washed out shade. The colors are true and easier to apply and blend. The softness is a plus, but you do need to be very careful with them. Dropping one on the floor was devastating.

Comments about Terry Ludwig Soft Pastel Sets:
The neutral colors are quite beautiful, but the softness varies from color to color with some being quite hard and scratchy. Does not compare to Schminke for softness. The square edges are useful.

Softest and most vibrant pastels

Comments about Terry Ludwig Soft Pastel Sets:
After hearing a lot about them I bought 3 dark colors to try them out. They are absolutely the smoothest and most vibrant pastels out of the 5-6 different brands I've tried. They are not round, so the edges are great for details. They are also pretty big sticks. I will be buying more in the future for sure.
The bad part: All three sticks were different sizes. One was actually almost third smaller than the others. I contacted Terry Ludwig folks and they were quick to blame Blick, but it was more manufacturer quality control issue in my opinion. Blick was quick to send replacements.

Generous selection of light value pastels that are so difficult to achieve and keep the integrity of the hue. A must have.

Comments about Terry Ludwig Soft Pastel Sets:
The darkest darks are possible with these large sticks, and the colors are vibrant rather than 'dead', as colors can be when mixed with black. The large rectangular sticks allow quick coverage, and the sharp edges create thin lines if needed; the ends allow expressive line-work. The only drawback is lack of identification of the colors - keep track of what you have by number, in case you need to order again!

Very smooth and creamy pastel, although very soft and crumbly. Nice pastel for larger areas where you need to fill in. not good for details.

Why NOT to order individual pastels

Comments about Terry Ludwig Soft Pastel Sets:
Be cautious when ordering individual Ludwig pastels from Blick. They wrap them nicely but do not label them and so its impossible to know which color is which. This means that if you like a color, you will not know the re-order number. I ordered a range of violets and have no way of knowing which one is which. I order all my pastels through the mail. NOT knowing which color is which is not very helpful.

Terry Ludwig Pastels (Intense Darks)

Comments about Terry Ludwig Soft Pastel Sets:
Having recently purchased a set of Ludwig's Intense Darks, I must admit I feel strongly compelled to write this review. In a sentence: WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE??? These darks really live up to their name, perhaps even more so. They're all consistently soft, and incredibly powerful colors. They're like the Pthalo blue of Pastels; a little goes a VERY LONG way. Now that I have them, it seems difficult to imagine any pastel artist NOT having a set of at least the intense darks. They're reasonably priced and a must have for anyone remotely serious about their pastel work.
